I received a gift of a Sony DVD/CD rewritable drive AD-7190A there something I need to make it compatible

Is the drive listed under My Computer?

The drive is compatible with the following DVD Disc:

WRITE SpeedDVD+R DVD+RW DVD-R DVD-RWDVD+R DL

DVD-R DL

If you are unable to burn using those disc then the burner is defective.

If you want to watch a dvd then you would need to purchase or download a program to watch the DVD movies.

try uninstalling product through device manager then reinstall could be corrupt driver if that doesnt work the laser inside is gone

Most operating systems from windows98 up dont need a driver disc for rom drives/dvd drives hat are internal

They will definately need drivers to be able to give out 100% of the performance.
You definately might have receive a disk while purchased the CD/DVD ROM.
Try that driver once and see the difference.

Look for "normalize" settings in your burning program, this may help.

You are going to have to use the ‘rule-out’ method to begin; remove your DVD-ROM and only install your DVD-RW drive as master; see if that solves the problem (a side-note; burners should be set to master and the other drive should be slave).
