Question about Apple iPOD 20GB Toshiba Harddrive for Gen 1, 2, 3 & 4 iPODs - MK2004GAL (Refurbished) (IP1930) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Frozen I have an Apple 3rd generation 20GB that is freezing on me. I loaded it up oneday and itunes told me to restore it to it's original state when I bought it. I did that and went to plug it back in to put some songs on it and it says I have to connect it to an external power outlet. I have done that and nothing happens when I plug it in to my computer or into an external outlet. It just has a picture on it saying to plug it in to the wall

Why doesn't the screen show the picture on the menu screen

This is the first generation of Apple TV.
It's getting rather old in it's specifications.
When was the last update software installed?
I received a software update for my recent model about 23 Oct.
If it's not getting updates to it's IOS then it may be too old to be compatible with iTunes 12. Technology moves forward.
Hold off for a possible future model or get the current model & use the old around the house on another TV.

[1] You can restore an Apple TV (1st generation)'s software from the main menu by selecting Settings > General >Reset Settings > Factory Restore.
If you are unable to reach the settings menu, try the following [2]:
  • Press and hold both Menu and down (-) on the Apple Remote for 6 seconds or until the status light blinks amber.
  • The Apple TV should Reset itself and show you a screen where you can select one of the following: Restart ,Run Diagnostics o rFactory Restore. Select Restart.

Ipod is not ABLE TO FIND THE OS ON YOUR HDD.
try to bring it close to your ear an try to hear. See if you can listen to clicking sound. if it does click, your in trouble as your hdd is messed up..
nothing much you can do about it, just when its trying to start and it starts clicking bang your ipod ( on ur palm ) as this would help the hdd needle to skip and bad sectors and might work again !
    good luck.

    FAULTY APPLE IPOD HARD DRIVE

Try starting the Ipod in disc mode attached to your computer and then reformat the drive using disc utility. That should map out any bad sectors. Then try running the Itunes restore software. Hope that gets you up and running again.

    Format Error

    Hi,

Most "Format Error" messages are generated because of hardware fault. This unfortunately would mean that your ST3160021A is no longer usable.

Alternately, you can try temporarily installing it to a 2nd PC and perform disk utilities on the said HD. Things you can try are partitioning or deleting existing partition, formatting and scanning to check for any bad sectors. You can install the ST3160021A as a primary slave, secondary master or even using an external USB to IDE/SATA adapter such as a VANTEC CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter.

Once you have verified that no sectors are damaged and that the HD checks out, you can reinstall in the original PC and proceed with Windows installation. If on the other hand errors do occur even with using the 2nd PC, you have confirmed that indeed the HD is defective and would require a replacement.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

    Good luck and kind regards.

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
