Question about Freecom (24358) 160 GB Network Hard Drive

1 Answer

Secured and compressed jpgs will not open

I have changed computers and just used my 400g freecom hard drive for storage now. When I first had it though, I put all my photos on it as secured and compressed files. Now it appears I've lost them all as I cannot open any of them. Please help, it's very distressing to lose all my children's photos

Hello patsyzara

(01) 1st, for now (as a precaution against data loss), please, don't add or delete anything to or from that external HDD (hard disk drive)

(02) Just to make sure, the photos and not just a catalog of the photos were originally stored onto the external HDD, yes?

(03) Do you still have access to the computer where you originally had the external HDD connected at the time you encrypted the files (photos)?

Even if the protected files were on the same external HDD that you are using now, the protection software is possibly associated w/ the computer on which the files were fist stored.

(04) Please, tell us exactly what mechanism (the name of the software, etc) you used to originally encrypt these files.

(05) Did you recall if you used software that came w/ the external HDD to encrypt your files?

(06) Please, tell us the the following:

(A) The operating system that was installed on the previous computer you're referring to. (Windows 2000, Windows XP, etc.)

(B) The model number of your Freecom external HDD. (look for a sticker or any markings on the case).

(C) The name of the encryption software if you can remember.

(06) If you still have access to the original computer, connect the external hard disk to that computer and tell us if you can see the files again.

(07) If you can, decrypt the files and then transfer the external HDD to the new computer.

If you need assistance w/ ANY of these steps or have any questions at all, comments, observations, etc., please, post back here w/ them. We will continue to work w/ you on this issue until it is resolved or we reach an impasse.

Thank you
BJ @:)

You can find the manufacturer's listing for your Freecom external HDD HERE.

    (08) Were you using the SECUREIT software found HERE?

I suspect a trial version of this software came w/ your Freecom HDD and that is what you used to encrypt your data (photos).

    (09) If that is or you suspect it may be the case, please, download the trial version of this software and install it onto your new computer.

If you purchased the full version of the software, you may be able to enter the product key, etc. that was given to you in order to enable the "full version functionality" of the software. Just let us know if that is the case (if you purased the full versiion).

Let's see if you can use this software to get your files (photos) decrypted for you.

You are going to need to recall any passwords or password phrases that you used w/ your encryption software (if any).

    Hello patsyzara

How did it go? Were you able to regain access to your encrypted files using the information and links I provided you w/?

I DO hope that is the case. :) If it isn't, just post back here and we'll continue to work w/ you.

    If
it is the case, would you kindly take just a moment to reward my efforts at
helping you w/ a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your kindness and the show of appreciation.

Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.

well, if you can Ping it, then the firewall is not likely going to be blocking it. Regardless, which product do you have ? The Silver Stone 2-drive NAS ? If yes, you should be using the FNS Assistant (FNSA)
The Freecom Network Storage Assistant helps you to locate your Freecom SilverStore 2-Drive NAS in your network. It can also be used to:
- quickly open the SilverStore 2-Drive NAS configuration website.
- configure the basic settings.
- mount shared network folders.
a) Start the FNS Assistant and select the device from the device list.
b) Go to "Web interface of your Freecom Network Storage device" for initial configuration

hope that helps.

How do I backup files to my Freecom external hard drive XS 3.5 ?? Ive installed it but cannot workout how to use it !! there are no manuals !!

you can open Computer on your screen and then there is C: drive and Freecom labeled to it. Open first the C drive, click Ctrl + A to highlight everything. Then click Ctrl + C. Then go back to Computer and click Freecom. Then click Ctrl + V. All the files will be transferred to Freecom. Then you may proceed for your next step. That is how you back up files.

It should automatically allocate a drive letter to it. Go to windows explorer and hit F5 to refresh the display and you should see a new drive letter with the name of FREECOM next to it.

Hard Drive not detected

If you are sure that the disk is okay, then I do suspect it is a power problem. Laptop USB ports often can not provide as much power as desktop USB ports. If possible try using an external power adapter with the disk and see if that works.
You can try some other external hard disk troubleshooting ideas, but probably it is the power.

Freecom 160GB Hard drive not recognised

Drives do fail Nick. Is it powering up [power supply problem?] Plug it in and go to Start/Control Panel/Admin tools/computer management/storage/ removable storage and disk management. See if the disc is recognised there. If it is not, and if the disk is spinning Try putting it into the deep freeze overnight. Plugging in next morning and if it fires up get as much off as possible before it goes down again.
