Wireless problem I have a dell with vista hooked up to a linksys wireless router . This works alright , but when I try to connect to the wireless router with my dell laptop with a wireless adapter I get connected but I can not get on to the internet . I think the problem is the router because I can get connected and have internet on other free networks . I want to connect to my own network please help !

Hello router_lost

I believe you are correct in your assessment that the issue is related to your router. Likely, that issue involves configuration - of your router and/or your laptop computer.

(01) Is the computer that is running Vista connecting to the Internet (via the router) using a wireless network adapter or a wired network adapter?

(02) Assuming that the Vista computer is connecting to the Internet wirelessly, please, tell us the manufacturer, model number and version of your router.

If the Vista computer is connecting "wired" and not "wirelessly" AND you have no other devices on your LAN (home network) that are successfully connecting to the Internet wirelessly through this router, then, it's possible that the router's radio is not enabled. However, if the laptop is "seeing" your router, then, of course, that isn't the case.

(03) Are you sure you are attempting to connect to the correct wireless router from your laptop?

I've seen it quite often where users will think they're connecting (or trying to connect) through their own router when, in fact, the router is a neighbor's (not their own).

(06) You can avoid this possibility by assigning an unique SSID to your wireless radio. In other words, change the SSID (wireless router's "name") to something other than the manufacturer's default SSID. (e.g. Netgear's default is "netgear" and Linksys's default SSID is "linksys", etc.)

It's best, for security purposes, not to assign a revealing SSID (e.g. "TheSmiths" or "2201YourStreetName", etc). Call it "BlueMoon" or whatever you like. Just something unique yet not revealing of your identity or location.

(07) Please, tell us the manufacturer, model number and revision of your router.

(08) Please, tell us the manufacturer, model number and serial number (or service tag) of your laptop computer.

(09) Please, tell us the operating system that is running on your laptop computer.

W/ this information, we'll be able to provide you with specific instructions for correcting your laptop's connectivity problem at home.

(10) Do you know if you have WEP or WPA encryption enabled on the router?

If you do, then you will need to enter either the router's wireless encryption "password phrase" or the hexadecimal key code password in order for the laptop to be allowed to access the Internet. You should only have to do this one time - then your computer will save the information.

If you've been connecting to free networks fine, then you've likely not been required to enter a password phrase or key in order to connect.

Please, post back here w/ answers to the questions I've asked here along with any other questions, comments, and observations you might have. We'll continue to work w/ you on this issue until it's resolved.

yes mke sure wep is correct code. make sure you home security level is the same as your laptop. have tried hooking up your laptop to the home with a cat 5 cable. we had to do this with 2 dell vista laptops. then disconnect lan and we hooked up wirless just fine. something in vista firewall settings.

My Dell laptop won't connect with my Linksys G wireless router


First check in your laptop wi fi switch is turn on if you have laptop.
Then check in computer that wi fi network adapter driver are installed correctly and enabled .
You can check it in my network places right click on it thne go to proeprty then you see there wi fi network driver then enable it.if disable.
Then you can see search for available networks.
If not works then post here so i give you assistanse for router configuration.

I was given a linksys wireless-g model wrk54g router but it didn't come with an installation disk. I have a Thomson speedtouch modem ST530 V6. Right now I am hooked up thru ethernet and getting internet...


was the router used by previous users? or did you buy it? if it was used then it was probably configured for different ISP. You don't need any CD. Just connect to the router via your browser (probably http://192.168.1.1) and adjust settings in WAN section.

After reformatting your dell 8400, did you reinstall all drivers of your devices? The linksys router won't be affected by the reformat. Your computer should still get connection from your router. This is a dell issue. If you have another computer connected and working with the router, that means the router is still functioning. Call Dell or linksys technical support. I don't see why not..
are you trying to hook up both computers to your linksys router?
if you have 3 computers now... I'm assuming your old pc was connected directly to the router, your laptop was connected wirelessly and now you have a brand new computer that you also want to connect to the internet using your lynksis router.. you should have not problems doing it, wirelessly or using a wire...as long as your router has ports avaliable...

Wireless problems with windows vista


You just need to remove the preferred networks on your vista, follow this.
Right click the wireless icon>network and sharing center>manage wireless network>remove all preferred networks.click OK.
Then connect again to your network that should solve it.
