Brother MFC 8840, Document Feeder is not workting

Need some guidience, we have a Brother MFC 8440, the document feeder is not working. Originally the copier was not acknowledging the paper in the feeder, after looking through this site, we replaced the Left Hinge, now the feeder acknowledges there is paper in the feeder, but it will not pull pull the paper through the feeder.

I used this copier a lot, every day, it gets to be a pain to have to place each paper on the glass bed to get a copy or fax done.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I am having the same problem. I replaced the left hinge. The document feeder will recognize the paper, but will not feed it through when I push start. It stops immediately and says to check original. I have tried to clean the rollers and the black flag is raised up. Any other ideas would be helpful. Thank you!

MAke sure that there is a black flag standing upright, that activate the sensor for ADF ready.

Normally we will clean the feed rollers and sensors, to rectify that problem

Thanks Seckhaus! I removed the back corner panel and one of the cables was disconnected. It's pretty tight in there, but I was able to reconnect and the printer is working as it should now! Thank you.

I have a brother MFC 8440 and the document feeder has never worked properly. It pulls the documents in slightly off line and causes the paper to jam before it gets to the scanner. It is out of warranty...

you might have some type of foreign debris covering the paper path, you might want to try heavier paper (almost like a thin cardboard) and try to manual drive it into the paper path, do not force it too much if it wont budge.

also try cleaning your pickup roller, lint free cloth with iso-propel alcohol.

Bad Scan Quality Using Brother MFC-7820N Document Feeder

Look to the left side of the flatbed glass for a thin strip of glass by itself. When you scan from the glass, the document stays put and the sensor moves across the document. When you scan from the feeder, the sensor stays in that glass strip and the document moves across the sensor. See what I mean? I would check the small feeder glass for dirt or scratches from staples or other flotsam. Also not a bad idea to blow out the feeder path with some compressed air to ensure the documents is handled smoothly. Hope this helps!

Brother MFC 8440 Automatic Document Feeder doesent feed

Could be a sensor in the ADF, or the hinge on the left rear of the scanner cover is broken.

Brother MFC 8440 Scanner has a line

Whoaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No need to da all that. Lift up the Doc feeder and look at the SMALL strip of glass, you will see a dot or something on it, clean w/alcohol. Voila taken care of. the dot ( pen mark, white out, etc...) makes a line because the document is Moving and that dot now looks like a line to the copier. :)

I need a new ADF (automatic document feeder), where can I get one?

ADF can be bought from a dealer, it has a few cables that need removal so it is a little tricky, it is also a expensive part (approx Aus$200, why are you replacing it, are you sure you dont just need to clean feed rollers or there is also another common fault on these doc feeders, the left side hinge breaks( replace hinge)

here is the brother part number for the adf (complete), you will need to purchase from a autherised brother dealer -

Replace document feeder

Contact a service dealer wich can be found on the brother homepage of your country. Describe the prob and ask for the price of the sparepart to be need. It maybe cheaper to buy a 2.hand mfc in case the sparepart is too expensive! Post here again if you decide to repair it on your own (feeder repair is quite difficult!)
