Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive
I have a Lacie 500 gb external drive that began making a strange popping noise this morning. I am using the drive to store Final Cut Pro 6 projects. The noise pops, and then FCP "thinks" for a moment. The drive begins to remount and then the sound comes back. I shut the drive down this morning for a few minutes and then FCP gave me an error message saying that the file was now unreadable. After switching computers ad getting the same message, I went through my autosave vault to find a working version of my project. When I found one from yesterday morning that would work the popping noise came back and I'm back to the same problem. The project is under deadline for an important client. Any suggestions?
I'm afraid your hard drive is cactus. The popping noise is most likely the read head hitting the cylinder. This is causing more and more physical damage to the PC as it attempts to read the files. You will most likely need to consult the supplier of the equipment for a warranty replacement, or go through the vendor. If the drive is out of warranty I suggest buying a new one and throwing the old away.
There is no way to recover a drive that is physically colliding the head with one of the drive plattes.
