They should stand behind their product. You may have to take them to small claims court as they will probably not pay for any install charges. They will probably offer to exchange the tank.

Electric tank water heater is in attic. When outdoor temps are high it doesn't work. Why?

Hi Jan:
Really interesting............
A puzzle I've never encountered before.
I'm a retired Contractor and Building and Plumbing Inspector so can offer an answer based on experience.
- In hot weather, attics get REALLY hot.
- An attic is an unusual location for a hot water tank.
- A thermostat senses the temperature of the water in the tank and determines when it needs to be heated.
- I would be suspicious that in your installation, the temperature in your attic is higher than the "high limit" for your water heater.
To phrase it another way, since the attic temperature is really high, and the tank thermostat is in the attic, it "thinks" that the water is already at the required temperature.
The only real "fix" that I could suggest would be to locate the hot water tank in the moderated temperature area of the dwelling.
Hope this helps.
I would appreciate your letting me know by comment to this post if that is the problem.
Cheers, and thanks for the puzzle.

Does a installation maqnual come with purchase of ecoh160dvln tankless water heater

The installation is according to your local code. They will tell you what outlets and where to have them- what water piping and what gas requirements. You will need a flush valve set( always extra)
Your city inspectors will lso control placement and venting requirementrs. This is not a plug and play install although it is straightforeward. You must meet the minimum water pressure and volume as well as the proper gas delivery requirements- even a drain..
Best on this point to hire QUALIFIED INSTALLER.

I purchased a Whirlpool gas water heater model ND40T62-403 from Lowes in July 2013. The pilot light has gone out on 3 occasions since Thanksgiving. It is out right now. I have everything unplugged and...

Go back to Lowe's with all receipts including the your purchase receipt, the plumber's bills and whatever records you have while speaking to the Whirlpool technician, and raise hell. What water heater is unsuited for your home?? Is Whirlpool crazy? Lowe's would not sell you an inappropriate water heater. You should have done this 3 months ago.

Register water heater

Whirlpool water heaters are made by AOSmith company, which owns American, Reliance, State, Craftmaster and makes water heaters for Kenmore and Whirlpool.
These are good heaters.

Register Whirlpool product at following link:

It is not necessary to register product for warranty to be valid.
And if you move to new home and take water heater, then warranty does not follow. So it might be disadvantageous to register product in that circumstance.

You can see brand, model number, and serial number located on label on side of tank.
The serial number is unique and is key for warranty coverage, even if you lost receipt. Serial number shows year of manufacture in first two digits.

It is not necessary to register water heater for warranty to be valid, as long as following applies: Original owner, single-family non-commercial residential installation, and installation that conforms to instructions shown in product manual, and water heater is maintained as shown in product manual.

If you purchased extended warranty, then remember the warranty is carried by a third party that also requires same as above.
And the warranty may be pro-rated, rendering it nearly valueless in later years.

Typical water heater warranty:
First year of warranty covers tank-parts-labor.
After first year, the warranty shrinks to tank-parts.
The math shows that shorter warranty tank has greater percentage of full coverage.
Convert ordinary 6 year tank into 9-12-15 year tank by maintaining water heater. Especially cleaning air intake located on bottom of tank, inspecting anode rod to prevent rusting, and following maintenance schedule shown in product manual.

Why is the home inspector removing cover on a water heater?
He might be going overboard to provide good inspection, but my experience says never mess with something old or it will break next day and you get blamed.
He could have made visual inspection for leaking, and checked if water was hot by opening drain valve and TP valve ... but he might cause a drip doing that.
He shouldn't open any appliance.
Did the inspector cause the problem? Maybe yes, or maybe not.
Maybe he helped solve a bigger problem that was looming but hadn't happened yet, and it forced you to get a new heater which you probably feel more comfortable with.

Call the manufacturer about warranty coverage. manufacturer appears on label on side of tank.

What is the drain size to run in copper for Zenith ZD300 dehumidifier. The inspector will not let us use a garden hose for drain as per you instructions. Fire hazard, we have to run a copper drain. What...

Fire Hazard? How can a rubber hose that drains water, be a fire hazard? This inspector is jerking you around. Since there are no copper fitting that will fit the connector, use a flexible stainless steel water water supply hose, that's normally used on an automatic washer. You'll wind up with 2 female ends, but that won't matter. Be sure there is a rubber washer in the end you connect to the unit's hose connection and only tighten it enough that it won't leak. If you over tighten it, it will crack or brake the plastic male connector.

Just for my own information, why is a building inspector necessary for the installation and approval of a portable dehumidifier? You can respond bu clicking on the Comment link. Thanks

I have a deck above my heater and the inspector has asked for the owners manual to verify if there is enough ventilation between the top of the heater and the bottom of the deck. How much clearance is...

This is the link to the owners manual above.
Below is the link to the installation and service manual.

Gas vents that are spaced less than 8 ft horizontally from a vertical wall or similar obstruction shall terminate not less than 2 ft above any portion of a building within 10 ft.

I would think that the inspector would interpret this part of the manual as calling for a venting kit to be installed and run two feet at least above and part of the building within 10 feet horizontally.

So if the deck is attatched to the house, you will need this to be vented. If the deck is seperate, you might be able to get away with leaving it as is.

What gauge wire do I use for 220V / 11000W / 50A water heater

I'd like to say use #10 wire, but your best calling your local building dept. as they may have specific code requirements. You don't want to risk having to rip it out later if soeone finds a violation. Even worse, if you ever go to sell the property the building inspector may site you for a violation killing the sale.
