Good DVD-A player?

By Cato - usenet poster

Can anybody suggest DVD-A players that are reasonably priced?  I can't
seem to find any models with the proper connections on back.  Thanks!

That makes NO sense. Why downconvert to CD quality audio when you can play
the DTS/DD 5.1 track on ANY DVD player???

ANY DVD-Audio player will have the proper connections for DVD-Audio.
There will be 6 analog outputs.

I would recommend getting a player that does both DVD-A and SACD,
however.

I would think so, surely they fixed it.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that.  I'm surprised, I haven't had any problems at
all.  Is there a list of titles with known compatibility issues?

Also, I see that they have a newer model for about $150.  I wonder if its
been fixed.

I've got a Pioneer DV-563a.  It plays DVD-A, SACD, MP3, and a whole bevvy
of other formats.  It's played pretty much everything I've thrown at it,
and it sounds great, IMO.  It has 5.1 outputs.  It's a low-profile unit.
And oh yeah, it's been discontinued, so you can find units on ebay for
under a hundred bucks.

connection.

The player is compatible with DVD-Audio but downcoverts the DVD-A signal
to regular CD-quality. Sony makes several SACD players that do the same
thing.

It's quite pointless, of course.

That's not DVD-Audio then. DVD-Audio requires an analog 5.1 connection.

Not actually so: Panasonic's DVD-S47 is a DVD-Audio player, but only has
stereo outputs for DVD-A playback, rather than the usual 5.1 channels.

I recently purchased a Panasonic F87 for about $100.00 at Amazon.  It
is a 5-disc player and includes all the analog outputs you need to
play DVD-Audio. The DVD-A works perfectly and has played all my DVD-A
discs flawlessly.  Sounds as good as my older Toshiba DVD-A player
which cost almost three times more a couple of years ago.

As a side note, you might want to avoid the low-priced Pioneer DVD-A
player (I forget the model number).  It was not able to play certain
DVD-A discs.  You can probably find info about it on a web forum such
as CDFreaks.

There are many dvd players out there for around $100 with composite,
component, and s-video, and digital and analog audio in and out
conections. Panasonic, JVC, Sony.......etc.  What connections are you
looking for?
