Polaroid DVR Recorder 160GB

This unit was working fine until recently the unit loses power during timer recording. At first I would simply unplug it and plug it back in and it would work now the unit does not work. What is going on?

Mine did same thing, and originally fine after (long unplug) reset. After a week that no longer worked and machine would not boot up at all. If the machine can't be saved can the "hard drive" data be saved? Did not know they were no longer on the market. Spoke with Polaroid and they said model now available with 1 year warranty. Anybody know any more about this?

Just wanted to say thanks.  My son has one of these and it just quit.  Even though he got the extended warrantee, the store will only give a refund, they will not repair it because they have been pulled from the market.
I foud a blown capacitor, but its the 68 microfarad, 400 volt cap at the input.  There are 2 of the 2200 mfd caps on the power supply but both look good.  I ordered one yesterday so we will see next week when it gets here.
Thanks again for the tip on where to start.

Mine did similar thing, and originally fine after (long unplug) reset. Habitually bad power where i live, so originally thought it was from momentary losses, then 1 month after the (short 90-day) warranty expired, it would not reset or come back to life. Mine had blown capacitor, $2.79 at local electronics shop and few minutes for me to remove and resolder and reconnect cables. Capacitors should have flat tops, one of mine was clealry bulged, with small drop of dried electrolyte from inside capacitor. Look at the 2200 mfd near the incoming power cord. Replaced 10V with 16V, as unsure whether it was just originally undersized for power fluctuations in my neighborhood. Has been working w/o problems since.

Sounds like the power supply or the fan has quit.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Power supply unit failure

It could be the IC101 (MR2920) and the zener D104 both failed, or IC1 (MD5001T) failed as well, here is the link where I've descrived how I fix the issue on my DVR-520H, it is in italian but you can translate it with Google: http://www.plcforum.it/f/topic/181344-riparazione-guasto-alimentatore-pioneer-dvr-520h-dvr-520h-failure/

Go to the hard disk setup menu.

Chose initiolized HDD, same as picture below.

Sometimes this can fix the problem.

Regarding the firmware, I do not think there is any firmware update available for download for this unit.

I did not find any download for your product.
Often, the image disk is distributed only to qualified repairers.

Tip

Force Eject

If a disc gets stuck in the recorder, there a few steps to try before the problem becomes service-related:

1. Power the unit off (so it shows the clock), then simply press the Open/Close button. The unit should power on and attempt to eject the disc.
2. If the above doesn't work - power it off again, then press and hold the STOP and CH UP button on the recorder itself together and hold them down until the unit powers up. This is called a force eject. If this doesn't work (usually if it's not going to work the recorder will simply come on momentarily then loop back into "bye" and go back to the clock), there is one last method to try.
3. Unplug the unit for 30 seconds. Press and hold the same buttons as above as you plug it in. After it performs the self-check "ooooo" across the screen it should do the force eject. If not, the unit requires service to be repaired and possibly the drive replaced.

DVR making bad DVDs

Three suggestions:
1) take it apart and clean the laser and the spindle 'hub' that the DVD rests on
OR
2) get a 'cleaner' disk that will 'whisk' any dust from the laser diode.
OR as a final suggestion
3) replace the DVD recorder with another. Plain old EIDE parallel interface units fit fine.
This is a very friendly machine in that it will accept PC compatible hard disks and DVDR drives.

Polaroid Will NOT edit out Commercials!

You need to post edit the recording;
First unprotect then do a split before the commercial
than split after, then recombine the parts without the ad.
Cumbersome, but it works

Loses power after timer recording

Hi Saturn et al,
I had similar issues with my Pioneer DVR-520H. It completely went off for quite a while when it should be going to standby after a timer session. At the start it would come good after a few days. Eventually it went off altogether and nothing would bring it back.
With my father-in-law being an electronics person we investigated with the help of the service manual which I found on the net. The finger was duly pointed at the power IC (MR2920) on the power supply board (Pioneer will sell only the complete board). I ordered the IC from the UK (nikko-electronics.co.uk) GBP8.99 which was the only place I could find it online and soldered it in myself (easy, if you can solder).
All fixed and working again.
Hope this helps.
