Hi i've just bought a dell gx270 mini tower and want to replace the dvd rom with a writer. I've noticed it is a lot smaller than my ide drives can you tell me what type of dvd writer i will need to buy. Many thanks
If you can think and look logically, you will be able to replace your current drive with a standard notebook drive, mostly called slimline.
open the case by pressing the two knobs at the side and lift it upwards. The unit clicks out easily, the removal of the flat cable and power connector needs a bit of patience, and you have to unscrew the drive from the bracket after that. I think you can get a drive for some $50,-

you can buy that type of hardware anywhere since it is standard for all desktop. Your current drive is IDE meaning that the data cable on it is an IDE type. Go to your local computer store and ask for a DVD writer IDE, since there is really no price difference now for a combo or dvd writer drive, it will be like 10 $ more for the writer. I live in canada so if you are in the US could be less here a DVD writer is around 35 $ at a computer shop.
the blue you are refering to is the dye on the disc, sometimes it's purple, normally the darker the better, but it's down to the individual writer and what disc it is compatable with, but your writers problem is all too common, as in my opionion the lasers that are being fitted in writers are of poorer quality than in the earlier days to enable the prices to become lower.
You can try one thing, but it doesnt always work; go to my computer>right click>hardware tab>device manager, then down list to cd/dvd drives and click '+' sign and highlight your writer, right click on it and select uninstall.
Restart PC and it will be automatically re installed, try again and if no change you will need to replace the drive as they are cheaper nowadays
