One thing to check is the ringer volume - by default you can change the ringer volume using the volume controls on the side of the phone even when the phone is locked - this often means that it can get pressed in your pocket to zero volume, which is very annoying. Try pressing the volume up button from the home screen while not playing any music and see if it goes up. You can set the volume in the settings and even tell the buttons to only change music volume, which is what I do.
Select the profile you want to use, then select 'customise' select 'ok' at the bottom of your screen, select volume on the new display page to verify your volume level, select back to previous page, then select 'alert type', now you can make selection of how you want your phone to alert you of an incomming call. i.e. Ring; Vibration Only;Vibration and Ring; or Vibration then Ring.
Settings In this menu, you can adjust various phone settings. To reset some menu settings to their default values, select Restore factory set. Tone settings Select Menu > Settings > Tone settings and from the available options: Ringing tone-To set the tone for incoming calls Ringing volume-To set the volume level for the ringing and message alert tones. If you set Ringing volume to be level 2 or above, your phone rings with the ringing volume ascending from level 1 to the level you have set when there is an incoming call. Vibrating alert-To set the phone to vibrate when you receive a call or a text message Message alert tone-To set the tone to sound when you receive a text message Warning tones-To set the phone to sound tones, for example, when the battery is running out of power
menu 2 settings 3 tones incoming call alert (set to ringing) ringing tone ( pick your ring tone) ringing volume (set to level 5 loudest) vibrating alert (on) message alert tone (pick tone) instant message alert tone (standard) keypad tones (on) warning tones (on) this is for the alarm and ringtone this is where your problem is so double check these settings ok alert for (all calls)
Settings / Ring Style / scroll down to Detail & press the left soft-key to CHANGE. In this menu you can adjust default ring volume, and select different sounds for calls, texts, voicemail, alarms and also adjust key volume.
If you are clever enough to make your own mp3 ringtones (they need to be tiny files to fit on this phone's tiny 500kb memory) you can even select these as your call or text alert.
hi follow these instructions 1 menu 2 settings 3 tones incoming call alert (set to ringing) ringing tone ( pick your ring tone) ringing volume (set to level 5 loudest) vibrating alert (on) message alert tone (pick tone) instant message alert tone (standard) keypad tones (on) warning tones (on) this is for the alarm and ringtone this is where your problem is so double check these settings ok alert for (all calls)

It seems to be a problem on all these Sony Ericsson phones.
You can make it louder by going to setting/profiles and select an outdoor profile.
Also choose a sound that is very audible, you'll have to download one. I recommend: Zedge, http://www.zedge.net/
