Dark Picture on Sony KP-51WS510

I have the Sony KP-51WS510 , maybe 5yrs. old. The picture gets dark as it warms up, brightness is cranked all the way up, and the picture (contrast I guess) is all the way down. Cleaned the lenses and mirror for only minor improvement.Could this be something getting hot? Ned

It has a decent picture at start up, but after about 5 minuts it begins to get darker. Mostly the dark scenes tend to loose definition.

With it being a rear projection TV and being 5 years old, you just need to buy a new lamp and replace the old one.
With a new lamp, it should be like new.

Please let me know how it goes and whether you need any further help.

Thank you for using Fixya and Good Luck fixing the tv.

you can check the solder joints first on the circuit board and surrounding area and see if you find a loose one first if you wish.

You may want to remove back cover and wipe/clean the three large black lens.

Also go to an unused video input and examine screen; Same problem?

Let me know what you find.

Hello ksolovy, i understood your Problem with the Sony KP-53V90 53 in. Rear Projection Television,In fact i encountered already that kind of problem you have it now. Check first the color wheel im sure that the blue section of your color wheel was burned and the blue color turn to dark; That's why you have seen dark picture, Re-place color wheel.

Dark picture on wega lcd

Yes, if this TV has a bulb it is likely to be the bulb.

I am not familiar with this exact model, but other LCD Projection TV will show dim picture after some time. Expected life of the lamps is about 2yrs. After 2yrs the picture will become dim. After 5yrs I am suprised it is even working.

Dirt doesn't cause this problem unless your are a smoker or have the unit "literally" outside. DO NOT try to clean it or let someone tell you to do it because it will cause more problems than it fixes.

Sony KP-51WS510 51 in. Dark picture

I finally heard from Sony tech assist. You have a bad high voltage transformer. As the set warms, the high voltage decreases and this is causing the problem. At this point, I would refer service to a local Sony authorized center.

These sets have been known to have loose welds in the picture tubes. Most likely your tubes are showing this problem.

Sony warms up - picture slowly becomes dark

You are losing screen voltage or whats called the boast voltage most likely. This is probably being caused by a bad capacitor in the sweep power supply. You will need to get a service manual as well as use an ESR type capacitor meter to find the bad capacitor(s). Good Luck
