What system are you using? Some of the older Compaq models had an issue where you need to make a registry change. Specify the make of your system, and what OS you're using (XP, Vista, etc.)

This could be a problem with the upperfilter and/or lowerfilter setting in the registry. If you're not squeamish about tinkering with the registry, do this:
1. Go into Help and Support on the start menu, then click on "undo changes to your system with System Restore" and create a new restore point. This way, you've backed up your registry in case you mess anything up!
2. start RegEdit by going to Start-Run, then type in regedit and hit okay.
3. Follow these steps (copied from MS, they actually spell it out pretty well). Note that you may not have a lowerfilters setting. In typical MS style, they make you do the same series of steps twice, but if you DO have both upper & lowerfilters, you'll see them once you're in the registry at the key they tell you to go to. You don't really have to Step 3 numbers 1-4, since you'll still be in the correct area.
Don't worry, it's really pretty easy to do if you take it step by step:
1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet. 3. Expand Control, and then expand Class. 4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. 5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak. 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. 7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step. Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); 1. 5. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.

Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak. 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. 7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey. 8. Exit Registry Editor.
Restart your system, and check it out! It may very well be working again!

What is the difference between a DVD+RW and a DVD-RW.

DVD-RW
It is the re-recordable version of the DVD-R. To use this type of media you will need to buy a DVD-RW recorder. The DVD-RW recorders usually record DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW media, too. Similarly to what happens to DVD-R, DVD-RW disks can be played in newer commercial DVD players without any problems. Older commercial devices cannot recognize the media, refusing to play the disk. To play a DVD-RW disk, commercial players need the disk to be finished. After finishing the disk, you can only record new data in it by reformatting it, which makes you lose all the recorded data.

DVD+RW

It is the re-recordable version of the DVD+R and everything that was said about the DVD+R is valid for the DVD+RW. Only the newest DVD players play movies recorded in disks using this format. There are recorders on the market that can record both DVD-RW disks and DVD+RW ones. These recorders are called DVD?±RW. Similarly to the DVD-RW, the disk needs to be finished to be played in commercial DVD players, and to record new data in the disk after having finished it requires reformatting it, which makes all the data in it to be erased. DVD+RW recorders are usually capable of reading DVD-RW disks (but not of recording them) and vice-versa.

There you are.

My dvd-ram working fine with cd but when i put dvd-rw nothing happend!

In that case either the disk is an incompatible model (it happens - try another brand) or the dvd laser has died - in that case you must replace the entire dvd-ram unit.

Readable DVD's but not CD's

That is a faulty lens. The lens reads DVD and CD on different laser beam frequencies. To read the TOC initial track the lens must focus on the laser beam reflected by the disk. If the lens is opaque, scratched or dirty, sometimes it can focus on DVD but not on CDs or the opposite.
Try using a cleaner disk, if that does not work buy a replacement drive. Today you can get a dual layer DVD RW for less than $30.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

Blue Screen and Computer freeze after using Memorex CD-R & DVD RW

Is it possible to try this drive in another PC? My recommendatoin, if the drive performs to specs in the other PC, would be to perform a System Restore (not the XP one, but rather the one that uses the HP disks). If you do decide to do the restore, be sure to backup anything that is irreplacable as the restore will put your system back to factory settings. Good luck!
