I still don't have a digital SLR camera, but on the old Cannon film SLRs, the focusing motor is within the lense itself. The extender should have contacts to transmit the signals from the body to the lense. Visually inspect the extender, otherwise you'll be forced to go manual.

I have a Canon T3i. With an FD lens it records to the SD card, but when I put an EF lens on the camera it says there is no lens mounted, and it will not auto focus or record to the SD card, if I cover

I've not come across this situation before. Any FD lens will only work manually for aperture and focus with an FD to EF adapter. I'm not sure how you are mounting the FD lens. An EF lens should work auto on focus and aperture.

New out of the box Cannon 550 with a 18-55mm 3.5 - 5.6 lens and I can only focus in the wide angle shot. The zoom to 55mm is out of focus even when set to AF and an automatic setting. Am I doing...

In automatic mode and automatic focus - The camera should focus onto the subject given that there's enough contrast between your subject and the background. If it not focusing at all even in broad day light conditions - You lens is faulty.
Also - Do you or your friend have another lens to test if the camera is faulty?

Hi- purchased the Extender EF 2X II; it seems fine with my fixed focus 300mm, but the auto-focus doesn't operate with my 70-200mm EF IS USM zoom, in any mode. Any suggestions? Thanks G

You haven't stated which body you have but the AF will not work with the extender if the effective lens aperture is too low (remember that a 2x extender doubles the focal length but halves the effective aperture).

Canon's own website states: "Autofocusing does not operate if the effective maximum aperture is greater than f/5.6 (greater than f/8 on the EOS 1V and EOS 3)."

Canon Extender EF 2x II

There are 2 Canon fittings, EF for all EOS cameras and EF-S for 'crop' cameras. The Canon extender does not fit crop cameras. Whichever make you look at, make sure it will fit the type of mount you have.
If you have not yet bought your lens of choice, Sigma are good and do their own extender compatible with their own lenses but not Canon's. This may be a good option for you

Canon Extender EX 1.4x ii not autofocussing

The EOS 40D only use auto focus up to aperture 5.6. Only the 1-series use auto focus up to aperture 8. The adapter adds 1 stop to the lens aperture. Since the 100-400 is a 4.5-5.6, the aperture range with the extender mounted will be 6.3-8.
There is a work around though. Just place a thin strip of insulating tape over the three pins on the lefthand side (lens side of the extender). No damage will occur to the camera or teleconverter.

My camera lense will not focus automatically or manually.

There is no battery in the lens.  The lens receives power from the camera. Whether or not the lens is getting power, though, you should be able to focus manually.
When you say you can't focus manually, do you mean that you can't turn the focusing ring on the lens, or that when you turn the ring the image does not come into focus?
If you decide the lens needs to be repaired, I recommend sending it to Canon.  You can go to their website (canonusa.com if you're in the US), click on support, and follow the links.
