Question about Carrier Air Conditioners

Open Question

I have a carrier furnace that I am working on and I do not have a schematic and the problem is I think I have a bad circuit board but I cannot prove it. the model is a 58SS080-BC The igniter will not light the pilot or even start sparking as long as the wire to the ignitor is plugged where it belongs on the gas valve as soon as you remove the wire the ignitor begins to spark.

sounds like the sensing bar on the spark ignition is dirty.....a wire brush works nicely.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Carrier electric furnace (air handler) stopped running


The 5 amp fuse may be bad, they go quite often, and they are exactly the same as the car ones. Check the fuse with a meter. If its OK turn the unit on and check for voltage going to the blower fan. You should get a reading between at least one pair of wires. The unit should have a schematic on it somewhere, check it to see which wire pairs are used for the variable speeds of the fan.

Located on the schematic on the inside of the furnace door should be a key for the blink sequence. 2 short blinks then 4 long ones would be a code 24 on that data plate

I have a Carrier Weathermaker 8000 furnace. it will not light.I tested the igniter on my upstairs furnace and it will glow and light that furnace. I can manualy light the furnace with a match. flame sensor...


If you're sure the igniter is good and the controller is sending voltage to gas valve to open, but not to the igniter then, yes, the controller is bad. The only way to know for sure is to remove the igniter's molded plug from the board and test voltage directly at the board. You should get about 100-120 vac to the igniter.

Goodman forced air gas furnace not firing


if your power vent moter is not running you should not have have glowing ignitor.Frist the vent moter must close an air prove switch in series with the idnitor .seems you have a stuck air prove switch.Its the one with a hose attached

Furnace runs but won't ignite.


Error code 12 is blower on after power up. Meaning: after you turn on power to the furnace for aprox. 60-90 seconds the blower will run. The blower should then shut down and the furnace should go through the start up process, providing that the thermostat is set for and calling for heat. If the furnace fails to start after blower shut down there should be a new fault/error code. However if the blower continues to run longer then 90 seconds and continues with the same fault code more then likely the circuit board is bad. Carrier Heating furnace


either the gas at the outside valve is off, or the gas valve at the furnace may be off, or the switch on top of the gas valve in the furace may be off. if they are all on, then you may not be getting a call for heat from the stat to the furnace control board. check to see if you are getting a 24 volt signal from the stat to the w terminal and common terminal on the furnace board. if you are then check to see if the voltage is arriving as 24 volts to the wires at the gas valve itself . if it is then the gas valve is possibly bad. if it is not then the board is possibly bad.look for loose or broken connections on the low voltage wiring. most unusual that the board does everything else but send power to the gas valve. you need to zero in on the valve i think and start by turning off power and that should restart the sequence of operation and you can observe it step by step . if you are not getting a call for heat then the stat may be bad be sure you are in heat , fan in auto and temp pushed up to max. if no 24 volts is sent to furnace board white and common low voltage board then stat is bad. remove it if you think its faulty and jumper the white and red wires together on the subbase. that duplicates what the stat normally does. if the furnace lights its the stat. having said that i realize the stat has to be sending a heat signal or the other stuff would'nt start. so..... back to the furnace board. check that 24 volts in from stat and 24 out to valve and that will put you on your problem item. good luck

These furnaces goes thru 4--steps for complete run time.... step-1, the small draft inducer blower motor blows and prove thru the small air tube that sucks a switch close to tell the circuit board to go to step-2......the glow plug glows for 15 seconds and step 3 the gas valve opens and dump gas in the venturi tubes and lights off the glow plug and proves thru a flame sensor (pin with 1 electrical wire connection) on the last venturi tube which tells the circuit board to go to the last step 4--, to turn on the main blower fan after 90 seconds!. Where ever it stops at then thats where your problem is!

There are 4 -steps for full run time to kick in a furnace.. step-1, inducer fan runs & prove thru the air tube which closes a switch and tell the circuit board to go to step-2, the igniter lights the pilot & prove its lit by heating the thermocouple, which tells the circuit board to go to step-3, opens the gas valve to dump gas in, which will light from the pilot light, and prove by a flame sensor metal stick on the last burner , which heats up and tell the circuit board Saying, ok , I've got flame.. step-4. when the box heats up, it closes a switch and turn on the main fan...! (Some gas-valves has a brain -or circuit board on top of them and are real sensetive to moisture..)
