Olympus 850 sw digital camera 2 yrs old! Used all day perfectly fine turned back on screen blank, still takes photos, Still flashes, still beeps when press buttons just lcd screen is black likes its off?...

Hi

Either the LCD screen is cracked or defective in some other manner. It's possible the LCD works but just the backlight is out as well. Either way, the camera needs to be opened and the LCD checked out.

The Olympus "Tough" and "SW" cameras are FAR FROM being either "Tough" or "S"hock and "W"aterproof. I have seen dozens and dozens of them with cracked glass over the LCD and destroyed by water damage. Sounds like something got inside your camera or it was badly dropped.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Initially, let's try a hard reset by removing the battery. Let it be without batteries for a couple of minutes to about an hour. Thereafter re-insert battery and try again. Additionally, pls verify that the battery is fully charged

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Rear viewing inner screen cracked

Thanks for the additional information.

Your camera is a generic model made by a Chinese factory and then sold on with different exterior trim and badging details under quite a few different brand names, such as the Polaroid i1032. Unlike with major brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus, obtaining spare parts is more difficult as the brand owner (in this case Praktica) would not have any major spare parts available. If the camera failed under warranty then the company would have simply exchanged your camera for another and disposed of yours, although cracked LCD panels are usually due to non-warranty causes anyway so would not be covered.

There are some suppliers who claim to be able to supply and fit replacement LCD panels for many products, such as FotoGeeks so it might be worth checking around, but in reality it probably will not be worth it. Your camera is likely to be nearly four years old now and has only been designed to last about five years, and when it gets to that age other major parts will typically start to fail. A replacement 2.4" LCD screen will typically cost around US$40-$50 or if in the UK £40-£50 (we pay more on our side of the pond, as usual!). Fitting can be tricky and there are no repair manuals for your model in the public domain but there are various YouTube guides to show you how it's done on other models to give you an idea. You'll also need to buy a set of reasonably good quality jewellers' screwdrivers which will be another US$20 investment if you don't already own them and a mobile phone case opening tool may be required US$2/$3. DIY repair is not guaranteed to work, and if you've been sent the wrong LCD panel there are usually no refunds unless the supplier has clearly got things totally wrong like sending out completely the wrong size of panel. In short, the DIY repair option is a judgement call for you to make but personally I think it's a waste of good money. Professional fitting will bring the total bill up to about US$100 and at that price you're definitely better off diverting the repair funds towards the cost of another camera. You can easily buy a brand new camera of similar or superior specification with a full manufacturer's warranty for around the same price.

Sorry, but in this instance the age of the camera, the lack of official spare parts, and the costs of repair vs. replacement all conspire (in my opinion) to make a repair a completely unrealistic option.

Despite the bleak outlook for your camera, I hope that you have still found my reply and the links which I've included to be of use in making your own decision about whether to fix it or throw it. If you'd like further clarification about anything I've written then please add a comment and I'll reply as soon as possible, but otherwise please take a moment to rate my answer.

Check out your local Kodak Repairer for new screen cost. LCD's are not repairable only replaceable.

CRACKED SCREEN

You cannot repair the broken LCD screen; the white you are seeing is the backlight for it. LCDs have extremely thin gold deposits along one edge that is contacted by a silicone rubber strip that has fine wires molded into it vertically and one edge is pressed against the LCD panel for contact. It is a fussy arrangement when new and it sure doesn't get any better when dropped.
I wouldn't delay too long looking for parts or repair; Polaroid filed for bankruptcy last week although I doubt if the parent had anything to do with the manufacture of your camera; as with many companies with limited manufacturing means, the camera was surely built by others.

Screen

Hey brigando,
What is most likely wrong with the camera is the LCD screen is damaged and needs to be replaced. I would bring it to an authorized service center and they should be able to give you an estimate on the repair. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
