o check, click windows start button, point to computer, click manage, then look for device manager. If you see an exclamation or "x" mark on your audio device this means that your audio driver is not properly installed.
Uninstall the audio driver then re-intall it again. visit www.hp.com/support and look for your audio driver if you dont have the cd installer.

To install audio / modem drivers, first download and install Microsoft
Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio
(sp32646):
Download and install Conexant modem driver (sp36089). This will give
error message and also will create a folder C:\swsetup\sp36089 which
contains extracted driver files.
The same method which is used for installing audio driver needs to be followed for modem.
