Monitor Screen won't light

My son-in-law looked at the laptop - he's a techie - but hasn't seen this problem before and isn't sure what to replace to fix. The laptop works just fine, but the screen is totally black. If you shine a really bright light on the screen, you can see the images. We don't want to spend $$$s just to replace a $5 part. (Electronics guru husband salvaged $1000 big screen by knowing how to replace (literally) $0.50 part.) Any ideas? Thanks!

I had the same problem and researched it online. If you can still see the screen if you flash a light on it, then the LCD inverter inside your monitor has gone out. The problem is easy to fix and you can find a LCD inverter on ebay for $10-$15.00 for your exact laptop. Also just search the net for "replacing LCD invertor walkthrough" and you can find detailed instructions including pictures. This will solve your problem :-)

I had the same problem and looked it up online. Your LCD inverter in your monitor has gone out. You can buy a new one off ebay for like $10-$15.00. Do a search for lcd inverter walkthrough on the internet and you can find direct instructions with pictures included.

I had the same problem, or sounds like the same problem. I have the extended warranty and sent it to the shop.

The problem was that the 'Inverter' had failed. I believe the inverter changes DC current to AC current.

I hope this helps...Ken

Its the liquid crystal display fluroscent backlit, its probably cracked, damage, or not connected right, you have to take apart the display and remove it or connect it right.

Compaq presario cq62-413nr screen is black and won't show on external monitor

We had this problem several times, even sent it back for service when it was under service plan. It was fine on arrival for service. The "non-techie" solution we came up with... pop the battery... the key series in the book doesn't work, hard reboot doesn't work...unplug doesn't work... the only thing they did during the shipping process was removed the battery so we tried that and it seems to work every time.

( Dell xps m1530 laptop ) Monitor blank, powers up but screen won't come on.

It ISN'T the LCD screen. Since you diagnosed with an external VGA monitor, you now know the problem is the laptop.

(When you connect an external VGA monitor to a laptop, you are bypassing the Video Cable, and LCD screen. You are connected directly to the laptop )

The basic Windows files aren't being found. The boot files. This may mean a bad Harddrive.

Do you have the Restoration CD Disk? Laptop on insert it into the optical drive tray, close the tray.
When asked choose - Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)

If a checkdisk is done, you have bad sectors on the harddrive.
There IS a special procedure in replacing a harddrive.

I am having a problem with the boot of my compaq aremeda 700. It says 1782 disk controller failuer then non system disk error or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready. I think this all things...

First thing to do is enter the BIOS screen. This is the computers built in system configuration. Navigate to the Exit portion and choose "Load Setup Defaults" . Save the changes and exit. The Laptop will restart. If it is still showing, ensure there isn't a disk in the CD-rom. If all of the above doesnt help. Make sure the hard drive hasn't wiggled loose.

Hi I am from the Philippines. I have a ASUS G1S-X1. While I was working my screen went black. I suspected of a defect on the video card. I tried to to boot my laptop, I can here the sound of booting but on...

I've seen this problem a few times with laptops my family/co-workers have. If it's like their problem, you should be able to plug in an external monitor and see on the screen. If that works, it's either your LCD screen or your LCD backlight inverter...One of the ways to tell whether it's one or the other is try to shine a bright light directly at the screen. If you can see anything on the screen, it means it's the backlight inverter. If it's still completely black, it's your lcd screen. Both can be replaced fairly easily, just be sure to look really well, because if you purchase the (more expensive) LCD screen, replace it, and still have the problem, you'll need to do the backlight inverter anyway. You can typically find instructions for replacing them online somewhere.

When plugging in the external monitor, wait for a while to see if it will boot to your desktop, then if there's nothing on the screen look at your keyboard. There should be a button on there to swap projection modes (usually have to hit fn+f5). Try hitting that a few times just to be sure. If you still can't see anything on the monitor, it doesn't mean it's not necessarily a software issue. Download/burn a live CD (any linux version will work) and try booting from that to rule out any possible software issues.

When powered up, the desktop is barely visible.

You probably need a new inverter or a back light replacement for the screen. Any good techie can do that for you, and not all that expensive.

be sure to circle through possible screen.
use FN key + a key with a screen symbol on your keyboard (or check your doc) to switch from main screen to external monitor and back.
sometime some techies use external monitor for pc final test and forgot to restore configuration to laptop screen.
At restart XP is expecting the last used monitor and nothing shows on laptop screen.
try also connecting any external monitor to vga plug.

Can a cracked notebook screen be replaced?

you don't have to purchase a new laptop/all you have to do is call your computer manufacture and get the LCD replaced.
or else
you can connect a desktop monitor with your laptop if you have a desktop
as its cracked so only thing we can do is either get the LCD replaced or connect a monitor with it to use your system.
