Question about IBM ThinkPad T21 Notebook

Laptop will not power up with Adapter

My laptop was working fine with battery installed, but using the AD adapter. I unplugged it to transport over the weekend and then plugged it back in to fire it up. A warning about low battery displayed, even thought I had the AC adapter plugged in. What would cause the laptop to not recognize the AC adapter? Now it will not even fire up because what little battery there was has died. I would be happy to just get it to turn on with the adapter. Thanks

My suggestion is more of a work around. Your laptop has the capability of utilizing an external port replicator. the port replicator attaches at a different place than the A/C connector. This will in effect become your base station when you are not mobile. the replicator will charge your battery(unless there is another problem with your board that is not listed) CHECK IT OUT

Two main possibilities.

  1. Your power lead has a broken wire inside, try another lead to the power pack.
  2. Your power supply has gone to a better place. Easy to find a replacement on eBay or your local laptop repair centre.
  3. Your power socket in the back of the laptop has been damaged or the solder that holds it in is cracked.
To test the second problem you will need a multimeter to check the unit is putting out power. If it is then move onto step 3

This is a little harder to repair, but can be easily diagnosed.
Plug the power supply into the laptop, confirm no power by pressing the power button.
GENTLY wiggle the power cord right at the connector left and right, up and down slowly and see if any lights come onto the laptop even for a second. The charge light will be the first sign normally.

If #3 shows results, then you will have to have the power connector resoldered to your motherboard by someone who knows what they are doing. This is complex at best. The whole laptop needs to come apart.

There is a good chance that the connection on the motherboard for the power jack has broken. I have seen and repaired a number of these. These jacks are surface mounted which means that the solder connection takes all of the abuse. While a relatively simple repair, getting to the jack requires a complete dis-assembly of the laptop. This is not a project to start if you have no experience.

The old battery will not hold a charge when not plugged in so i bought a new battery. the battery came today in the mail and says "plugged in, not charging" and the battery light on the front is...

Hi,

Im very sorry to hear that, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.

2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.

3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.

4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Your response is very much appreciated...

My daughters Toshiba satellite l505d will not boot up correctly. It starts but then nothing happens. What do I need to do. Have already taken battery out and restarted. Any help would be helpful.

Try the following.
1. Remove battery and plug in the AC Adapter and check if it works
If yes - Battery is defective
If no - Motherboard Problem/AC adapter

2. Check the AC adapter LED indicator if its lighted or not(double check by a multitester)
If lighted - it works properly
if not - replace
3. Try to reinstall WINDOWS operating system by the use of the installer CD
4. Reformat your computer and install necessary drivers and applications

Thanks. Cheers!

Dell x200, no power at all.

By no power you mean the computer is not turning on right?

If that is the case there are just a few things you can check,

1. Check the adapter if it is working fine the LED on the adapter should be lit on when you plug it in the laptop.

2. Check the port where you plug in the ac adapter.
Make sure that the port in the back of the laptop is not damaged.

3.Check the wirings of the ac adapter.
Make sure there not damage.

4. After the 3 steps and you're sure it's a good adapter try to turn on computer. If not.
The best thing to do is to use another working adapter or if you have another laptop try to use the adapter you're using to that laptop and if it is working
then you have a problem.

5.If it ends up that the ac adapter is working including your battery. Then to fix your problem you'll need to replace the motherboard of that computer.

Hope this helps!

It sounds like there is a problem with your motherboard. You would have to take it someplace to run diagnostics on it. It may be time for a new laptop
