The unit is most likely in protect mode. This means that the output section has been turned off to prevent further damage to the amp. Typically the problem is the output transistors failing. This will result in a parts cost of between $15-$30. Add in the local labor rate for the total repair cost.

Its all about the quality of the converter in the Headphone unit.

If the quality is lower than the quality of the converter in the receiver, then using the head jack is a better idea. Since there is more room, power, and money going into the receiver, it may be better

I do not believe that there is a cheap way to connect to the headphone with optical audio

The only way to be sure though, is to test it and see. Connect your computer to the receiver with HDMI, play audio through, and compare it to when you just connect your computer to the headphones, via optical audio

The broadcaster of the TV station has to tell you they are transmitting surround sound - sometimes they are just transmitting stereo. Also, the media as in CD's and DVD movies must have surround sound embedded or recorded on it to allow surround sound.

I have the Yamaha HTR5935 reciever- When I turn the power on, the unit stays on for about 3 seconds and then shuts itself off. So the power is running to the unit. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you have either your speaker wires crossed, the pos and neg are touching, or a pos is touching the case of the receiver.

Centre speaker not working on yamaha surround sound unit.

Check your "Setup" in the main menu of the receiver. Press "Menu" or "GUI" whichever you have on the remote and go to "Manual Setup" then toggle to "Audio" then "Speakers" then toggle to "Center Channel" and make sure it's on "Large" or "Small" instead of "None". If you still don't have audio, post a comment with the model # of your receiver, I'll pull the book and help you further. Hope this helps.

I CANNOT GET MY OLDER VCR TO WORK WITH NEWER EQUIPMENT.

The VCR is straight analog/composite and if you are trying to get it to show up on the TV via the HDMI connection between the receiver and the TV it is probably not going to work correctly until you add a dedicated pair of audio connection from the receiver to the TV...
