Hello donnajean79,

Are you able to get into ANY of the user profiles?
If not, then the issue is quite a bit more complex in terms of what steps will need to be done in order to regain access to the operating system. In that even, please, let us know and we'll assist you w/ that.

If you CAN get into ANY one of the profiles, please, follow these steps:

(Note: I have not tried this on a profile that does not have Administrator privileges. I would not expect it to work in that case if the permissions were set up correctly. Do, try it anyway, though.)

PLEASE, NOTE: * The upward pointing carat (^) indicates a space. Strike your space bar one time for each carat.

(01) Click on the START button

(02) Click on RUN

(03) Type verbatim (w/out the brackets): [ cmd ]

The window will open up w/ the following path:
C:\Documents^and^Settings\[USERPROFILECURRENTLYLOGGEDINTO]

(04) Type verbatim (w/out the brackets): [net^user^Administrator^*]

(05) Hit ENTER

(06) Type in the password you'd like to set for the account (the cursor will not advance while you are typing)

(07) Hit ENTER

(08) Type in the password again to confirm (again, the cursor will not advance)

(09) Hit ENTER
(10) Click the [X] in the upper right-hand corner of the COMMAND WINDOW

(11) Log off the current user account and log in to the Administrator account w/ the new password.

You can use this process for any user on the system - including the Administrator.

If you don't want a password set for a given user, just skip steps (06) and (08)

Please, wait until your problem has been resolved before assigning ratings to the experts' contributions to solving your problem. Once you assign ratings, the problem will be automatically closed and we'll no longer be able to assist you. As long as the problem remains open, we will continue to work w/ you until it is resolved.

Once you're all set and no longer need our assistance, please, kindly take a moment to rate the experts' contributions. It's customary to assign "FixYa" to those experts whose contributions solved your problem or answered your questions.

    Thank you again,

If you cannot access ANY user profiles, then a boot disc will need to be used in order to reset the Administrator password.

UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) found HERE has a utility that can reset the password for you.

If you've never created a CD or DVD from an ISO image file b4, please, let us know. We'll teach you how.

If you have not tried the following already, please, do:

When you reach the Windows login screen, hold down a [CTRL] and a [ALT] key at the same time. With those keys still held down, strike the [DELETE] or [DEL] key.

    Repeat this process TWICE.

If a list of users comes up, try logging in w/ each user. You may find one w/ no password assigned.

If that doesn't work, try logging into the Administrator account w/ no password. (The default for the Administrator account is for no password to be set.) You may get lucky.

    Hello donnajean79

How did it go? Were you able to gain access to the laptop (resolve the password issue) w/ the information and links I provided?

I DO hope that is the case. :) If it isn't, please, post back here and we'll continue to work w/ you.

If it is the case, would you kindly take just a moment to reward my efforts at helping you w/ a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your kindness and the show of appreciation.

Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.

I upgraded my hp pavilion vz5000 for xp to vista and now I recieve "no audio devices installed" but my sound was working before the upgrade

The problem is most likely a driver issue. XP drivers usually aren't compatible with Vista. Also, I'm goin to take a shot in the dark here and say that you meant to say zv5000 because there is no vz.

I'd give you an exact link to the driver you need but I don't know which version of Windows Vista you're running.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=385149&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=376999

Go to that link and select what version of Vista you have and it should point you in the right direction.

If you'd like more help, feel free to contact me at perdue1202@yahoo.com

Good luck.
