NOTE: Setting the Print Darkness to 5 will establish a baseline for the machine. After the setting is set to 5 and the fault code clears, you can then change the setting back to where you originally set it.

To set the Print Darkness to 5:

  1. Select [Printer Options] on the right side of the Touch Screen.
  2. Use the [Up] or [Down] arrow buttons on the Touch Screen to set the Print Darkness to 5.
  3. Select [Apply]. Make sure you select Apply or the machine will default back to Print Darkness 4 in the Printer Options screen.
  4. Select [Close] to close Printer Options.
  5. If available, select [Reset] in the Fault Frame.
The Fault Frame is a way the machine communicates with the user. The information the Fault Frame provides may be informational, such as explaining what features have been disabled, or provides instructions on fault clearance.
  1. Select the shaded Printer icon on the top of the Touch Screen to view the Fault Frame. The Fault Frame will open.
  2. Select [Reset], if it is available. If the Reset icon is not available, then follow the instructions in the Fault Frame instead.

CAUTION: Do not use warm water or cleaning solvents to remove Toner from your skin or clothing. This will set the Toner and make it difficult to remove. If any Toner gets on your skin or clothing, use a brush to remove the Toner, blow it off, or wash it off with cold water and mild soap.

    1. Open the left and right doors on the printer and locate the Toner area on the left side. Step-by-step instructions are attached to the panel next to the cartridge.
    2. Place a few sheets of paper or a drop cloth on the floor under the Toner Cartridge area to catch any Toner that may spill.
    3. Pull the empty cartridge out of the printer until it stops.
    4. Turn the green handle to the right (the unlatched position) to release the cartridge and lid.
    5. Remove the empty cartridge. Dispose of the cartridge as normal office waste or recycle it in accordance with local regulations.
NOTE: For recycling information, click on the [Recycling] link under the Product Resources section on this window.

    6. Make sure the correct cartridge (MICR/non-MICR) is available to install in the printer. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, but do not remove the paper seal.
    7. Turn the new cartridge upside down and gently shake the cartridge thoroughly to loosen the Toner.
    8. Insert the new cartridge into the printer until it stops, and then turn the green handle to the left (the latched position) to secure the lid of the cartridge.
    9. Hold the cartridge in place and pull off the paper seal.
    10. Discard the seal along with the paper or drop cloth from the floor.
    11. Close the printer doors.

    1. Open the left and right doors on the printer and locate the Toner area on the left side.
    2. Clear the jammed paper or obstruction from the area.
    3. Close the printer doors.
    4. Press the [Continue] button to resume printing.
    5. Discard of any damaged sheets sent to the sample tray or purge tray.

Brother Fax 4100 ''error code 71'' Started smoking, then stopped

Error 71 normally indicates a laser fault, but the smoke may be an additional fault such as the fuser or the power supply. The cost of the machine repair could be more then it's worth 8(.

Cannot receive or send faxes, the telephone line is working ok.I have a hp officejet 6100 series all-in-one

Try unplugging the machine for 10 seconds, normally HP's will tell you if the have a bad modem ("checking phone line").

Plug a regular phone into the wall jack and listen for a dial tone also make sure the phone cord is plugged into the LINE port of the fax not the phone icon port.

XC-830 copier Displays fault code H-3

Give this a try , if it continues you will have to replace the fuser.

Performing a Fault Reset 14 will reset your copier and will help to clear error codes.
  1. Turn the power off.
  2. Locate the Clear Button, which is grey in color, in the upper right corner above the green Start Button.
  3. Locate the Auto Button the lower left corner of the Control Panel.
  4. Turn the power back on.
  5. Press the buttons in the following sequence, releasing each button after each time you press it: [Clear], [Auto], [Clear], [Auto]. Every light on the Control Panel should go out, and the error code should clear.
  6. If the error code has not cleared, wait a few seconds then repeat Steps 1 through 5.
  7. Program the copier as if you were going to make 14 copies.
  8. Press the green [Start] button to store the reset code. The copier will return to the ready position.
  9. Run a test copy
