Question about Gateway FPD2185W 21 in. LCD Television

1 Answer

FPD2185W Hi Firehawk, I took mine apart after it stopped turning on and found the 8 caps in between the two heatsinks. Are these the medium 470uF25v that you removed and replaced? Did you change the slightly lager caps on the board as well? thanks

Power Supply rapair

I fixed my Akai LCT3201AD in about 30mins. using 3 small parts from Radio Shack. Once I got the back off, I found the power supply board (PSB), mine was part# MLT-169B rev1.2. I looked at the capacitors (caps.) first, because they are usually easy to diagnose. I noticed the caps. bubbled out on the top of the board (where all the cables connect to it). There is 3 of them in a row, positioned between the two large heatsinks. My guess is that the heatsinks are generating a LOT of heat over time, because of bad ventilation, and causing the caps. to fail.
I went to Radio Shack and found 3 caps. (only had 3 in stock). The original ones were 16V-1000uF, Radio Shack only carried 35V and 50V in the 1000uF caps., so I bought the 35V ones and headed home, I removed the old caps. from the board, and installed the new ones. The 35V caps, are a little bigger, so its a tighter fit on the board, be careful. It took longer to remove the back from the TV than it did to do the soldering. YouTube.com has excellent videos on how to de-solder caps. on PSB's.

Total money spent on repairs:
$1.59 ea for 3 Caps. (part# 272-1032) $4.77
$2.99 for new soldering iron tip + $2.99
$1.00 donation for St. Jude's + $1.00
Total including tax $9.30

So for less than $10, I did a repair that my local TV repair shop wanted $575 for. Online stores want anywhere from $100-$275 for a PSB. If I get another 2 yrs out of it that's well worth $10.

Anyone have part #'s on the capacitors?

I use this monitor on my desktop system. A great monitor until it died with this same issue. I almost went out and bought a new one, but thought first I'd search Google to see if anyone else has experienced this. That is when I found this posting.

After opening the case and getting the printed circuit board out, I saw that the eight 470 mfd capacitors had slight bulges on the top. I went to Radio Shack. Bought 8 new cap for $1.19 each and a soldering iron and solder.

I'm not an experienced solder(er) so it took me about two hours to remove the old caps and replace the new ones and put the monitor back together.

VOILA!!! It works perfectly!

Thanks to all of you who took the time to post this.

Screen only stays on for 1 sec

Assuming you changed all the caps and did it correctly.
IF you get flickering, It could be a transistor on the inverter board.
OR !!! and probably more likely,
It could be one of the bulbs in the lcd itself is failing. It only takes one bad bulb to stop an inverter from firing up !! You can check them one at a time if you have another working monitor.
If you do unplug a good bulb from the good monitor and try each of the questionable ones, one at a time.
Doesn't have to be a gateway monitor to test it, just needs the same backlight plug.

FPD2185W turn on problem

I had a similar problem... mine would work fine all day. I put it to sleep at night and when I go to wake it back up, it would come on for a second and then back off.

---------------------------------------

Here's my fix:

BE CAREFUL when popping the case open and unplugging the connectors!
Everything is flimsy and can break easy. TAKE YOUR TIME, and be very gentle.
Ikeep electronic screwdrivers, tweezers and the like for projects likethis. The connectors were a b*tch to get out. They are darn-near microscopic, so take your time and skip that next can of beer... you're going to need patience and concentration to get the little bastards out.

OnceI got inside, I found the capacitors were NOT bulged out the top, leaking, or leaning; however I noticed some of the bottoms on the canswere sticking out further than others.
Hard to say if they are bad, but it won't hurt to replace them since I'm already knee-deep into it.
There are 14 capacitors total that I replaced. You might as well do all of them.

Ok, now time to find the replacement parts:
Thenew capacitors were a bit of work to find. My local Radio Shack andtheir online store didn't have some of them, and the ones they didwasn't rated the same.

The OEM capacitors are rated 105* (1000hrs). There were a Samxon brand. According to some web sites, thesecaps are a general purpose and a lower-quality cap.

The Radio Shack ones are 85*. They would probably work, but who knows for how long.
Ifigure the OEM caps are already made by the lowest bidder, so I betternot take the chance and make it worse! Besides, Rat Shack didn't evenhave all of them.

Here is a list of the caps I found in mymonitor (your monitor may be different and you should check yoursBEFORE you order them)

* ALL OF THESE ARE RADIAL ELECTROLYTIC (aluminum can type), 105 deg. *

QTY. (1) 10 uf, 50V
QTY. (1) 47 uf, 25V
QTY. (2) 68 uf, 450V
QTY. (2) 220 uf, 25V
QTY. (8) 470 uf, 25V

I found all of the parts at Allied Electronics: https://www.alliedelec.com/
Total parts was less than $8.

Allied part #'s:

10uf: 613-0743
47uf: 613-0783
68uf: 613-0312
220uf: 613-0766
470uf: 613-0190

According to their specs, they are good for 2000 hours.

Digikey also had them: http://www.digikey.com
Theirprices were comparable, but I couldn't get all of the same manufacturer(not that it really matters, but I'm picky like that :) )

I took my time and I was up and running in about an hour. Most of the time was spent removing the old caps. They can be a real bear to get out if they have the sticky goo under them.

So far the monitor is running perfectly. Only time will tell if I get the power-up problem again.

Hope this helps.
