SOURCE: Fridge not cold enough and build up of ice at back of fridge

We had the same problem and were told that gas was not circulating properly. We had it topped up, but it broke a week later. It had to be scrapped.

SOURCE: I have a Smeg Fridge

Your problem may be as simple as defrosting the unit. When the frost gets to thick in retards heat transfer.

SOURCE: Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.

SOURCE: Fridge thermostat appears to have failed. Freezer

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

SOURCE: replacing a fridge thermostat of a Smeg FC40RX fridge freezer

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS METHOD UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND ELECTRICAL SAFETY. The thermostat is behind the cooling element at the back of the fridge compartment and it connected to the dial at the top front of the compartment that controls its temperature setting. Remove the front plate to access the switch and you will see the wiring that goes to the thermostat. Connect the two wires to the thermostat and if the fridge does not start the thermostat is faulty. Replacements are available, but you may need to do some hunting on line. With the power off this time, securely tie a few feet of string around the thermostat wiring at the switch. carefully loosen the cooling element to free the thermostat and pull it free. Now tie the string to your new thermostat and pull the string back through so the wiring is pulled into place. Put everything back the way you found it and, after a short while, enjoy a nice cold drink.

Smeg FAB28QRI thermostat not restarting fridge unless I hit side of fridge! Do I need a new thermostat?

It could be a loose wire on the terminal of the compressor. Also check for loose wires on the thermostat. If that is ok, the thermostat could be bad because it is a temperature controlled switch that turns the compressor on or off.

Freezer works, warm air in fridge.

If the ice/frost buildup is fairly thick and only on the back freezer panel then you have a defrost problem. Most likely the defrost thermostat is bad. It would be hard to explain how to test this in writing but there is a tech sheet underneath the fridge behind the grill on the r/f. It is in plastic which is stuck to the fridge. This tech sheet will tell you how to put it into diagnostic mode. First take the back panel of the freezer off (may need to get frost off first). Should be four 1/4" screws in each corner of the panel to remove. Will need to remove racks, door (should just lift off), and ice maker first. Remove vent in center of freezer panel by pushing up little tab in the center of the vent and using a screw driver to pop it loose on each side of the vent. Then remove thermistor cover on right hand side of panel. Remove (by pushing thru) ice maker plug. Once the panel is off put the fridge into defrost by the instructions on the tech sheet. If it goes into defrost (heater will get hot) then the main control board is bad. If not shut the doors to reset, defrost evaporator with a hair dryer and remove the defrost thermostat. It is a little metal round piece with two wires coming out of it and just clips onto the evaporator. Cut the two wires coming out of the thermostat, strip them back and splice them together. Now put it into defrost again. If the heater comes on then you know the thermostat is bad. Diagnostics mode can also test all functions i.e. condensor motor, compressor, evaporator fan, and thermistors. With all of that said, if it isn't a thick frost buildup the evaporator fan motor may be bad which is the most common repair on this model. It sits just behind the vent in the center of the freezer panel. Let me know what you find.

How to Replace a Thermostat in a Fridge?

If there cooling and defrosting problem in your fridge. Also over cooling or not getting cooling properly problem. Then the problem relates to thermostat.
The procedure to replace the thermostat is as follows: ---
1) First of all unplug the fridge/refrigerator unit from electrical outlet for complete safety.
2) In top freezer and bottom refrigerator model units. The thermostat is located at the rear of freezer side. But in some units its located in the bottom of the refrigerator floor panel.
3) In side-by-side refrigerator the thermostat is located at the back of the freezer side.
4) To remove the thermostat you will have to remove the screws from the icemaker section located in the freezer section.
5) After the screws from the freezer’s inner section are removed. The inside panel will get loose and come out.
6) Many a time the screws are hidden under rubber type butches. So its bit hard to locate the screws. So check out properly that all the screws in the inner section are properly removed.
7) After the inside panel of the freezer section is removed. You will see the thermostat. It has wires connected to its terminals. Be care full that you don’t pull out any wires. They are very thin and delicate wires.
8) The wires are connected to the thermostat by a connector. So slowly remove the connector from the thermostat using a needle nose pier. Take care you don’t put any force while doing this. It’s very delicate but not very hard to do.
9) After the wires are removed. Remove the screws holding the thermostat .In some models the thermostat is screwed to evaporator coil tubes. In that cases take care you don’t damage the tube while removing the screws holding the thermostat.
10) Before removing the thermostat take care you note down the position of old thermostat. so after the old thermostat is removed out by removing the screws. Place the new thermostat in the same exact position.
11) Refit all the parts which you removed while removing the old thermostat in reverse method. Take care you don’t miss any part fitting.
This will help. Thanks.

Fridge not getting cold

There are 3 likely possibilties, either the compressor is heating up and tripping or if the compressor is working there is a leakage of gas, the third is there is slight moisture or jamming in coil, filter or pipes which is causing uneven cooling. Cheerio

I have a red smeg fridge freezer with many scratches on the doors which i would like to repair if possible, someone has suggested tcut, but i'm a little apprehensive. Thanks

T Cut removes paint as it is polished on to a surface, it is really only suitable for removing oxidization from auto paints.

A better solution is to use a coloured surface polish also used on car paints this will not be abrasive and is available in red from auto stores

I have a 2 year old SMEG FAB 32 Fridge/Freezer and the freezer section has suddenly lost temperature. Upper fridge section is fine but freezer not. I have emptied, kept door shut, turned dial up but no success.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Wouldn't expect problems on a SMEG just 2 years old.

You could have a bad thermostat or the refrigerator could be low on Freon, make sure you clean off the exposed coils on the back of the fridge and underneath to free it from dust and dirt – use some type of a blower for underneath and the coils you can vacuum off or wipe off the coils, if not call a service tech to have a look @ the refrigerator – it might have a bad compressor
