Onkyo TX-SR702 keeps going into speaker setup mode
I have an Onkyo TX-SR702 (similar to SR602). It's been working for about 3 years. Recently I've experience quite a few times that, while I was watching DVD or listening to music, I suddenly heard a "boom!" and then no audio anymore. After tuning off the receiver and turning it back on, it continues to work.
When it happened again today, I looked at the receiver display, and noticed it has "auto sp setup?". So I ran auto speaker setup, checked all other setup as well. Then after a few minutes while watching DVD, "boom!" happened again. Now it seems it happens more frequently.
Any known issues? I checked all my connections, and they seemed to be fine.

Need to know your source and exactly how that source is connected to the receiver. Also need to know what surround sound mode you are using and whether the program material that drops out is compatible with that decoding format. Might be as simple as changing surround modes when this happens, but you should know that many cable boxes and some disc players routinely drop their digital audio signals from time to time and can give you these symptoms. I would forget the TV for now. I would use another input source to confirm where the problem is. I would hook up a CD or DVD player to it and check that the speakers are working as they should. If they do work, you may have a bad cable from the TV. Or the new TV is not set for surround sound. It may be as simple as selecting the proper decoder from the TV menu.
Make sure you have the tv volume turned right down as this will cause an echo,also set amp to prologic 2, and set up xover to suit your speakers or go for the THX standard of 80 hrtz and as a rule of thumb set front L,C,R speakers to zero rears to about +4or5 and your sub to -5[ dont know which speakers you have but try setting the subs on board volume to the 10,o,cloak position],also make sure the speakers -,+ are wired the same at the amp and speakers.
Does it display any message like "Protect" or something similar? Do you hear a relay click on then off?
Did the amp just not power up one day or did it stop working while you were listening to it? Finally, do you have teenage kids who might have been listening to your receiver and would have "neglected" to tell you that after listening to their music it suddenly stopped working?
It could be an internal fuse but chances are its something that requires a technician to repair (like the output transistors).
this could be the pre amp transistor or the power amp that needs replacing
the pre amp transistor is cheap but the power amp is not
if you did not crank it , then it is probably just the transistor that needs replacing
The unit is in protect mode until then. What needs to be determined is why it takes that long for the system to settle down. Basically, there are circuits built in to prevent faults from causing damage to external devices like speakers. These circuits prevent the output section from turning on until all of these voltages are correct. If you recall from a long time ago, it was common for the speakers to produce a loud pop when the receiver was first turned on. These circuits prevent that (as one example).
This unit should be brought to a service shop as it will require signal tracing to determine the faulty component. This is not likely to be diagnosed remotely through a forum like this.
