Question about Kenmore Elite HE4 Electric Dryer

1 Answer

Dryer appears broken, heard LOUD sound from other room (broken belt?)

Had a really heavy load of wet clothes put in dryer, after some time running, we heard a loud noise while we were watching tv. Later checked on the clothes and they were still wet. Dryer panel lights up and when you push start it makes a sound like a electronic click to turn on, but doesn't do anything.
I know nothing about dryers, could we have busted a belt or something?

Problem Solved!, I am so proud of myself. I started taking off all the screws in back and removed the top and saw the little tiny thin belt that turns the drum. I pictured it to be much bigger; no wonder it snapped. I bought a replacement one for $18+ and got a copy of the diagram of all the internal pieces. I only had to problems. Diagrams don't show you how to do anything, so I wasn't sure how to get the belt around the drum. Turns out the silver piece on the back of the drum covers a big hole (where heat comes in?) and if you pull that back you can get the belt inside the drum. Once you do that, you can fish it past the edge of the drum and then just rotate the drum until you get it around the whole thing. At first I thought the belt was too big, because I wasn't sure how to configure it around the spring wheel and the spindle thing on the motor. It finally dawned on me how to put it in place (can't draw diagram here) and whola, back in business.
There's no greater feeling than being able to fix something stupid you did for under $20.

I had the same problem, except I thought there was even more wrong with the dryer. When I tried starting it, the dryer just clicked and would not start. After tearing the dryer apart I noticed the belt lying there broken. After looking at the service tech manual which was kept inside the dryer compartment, I realized there was a switch which only activated when the belt was putting pressure on the pulley. Now all I need to is find a new belt and install it, and maybe not fill the dryer too full so as not to break the belt

Drum will turn empty but will not turn with heavy wet clothes in dryer. Is it a bad motor?

no, most likely, especially if it sounds right, it is a bad belt. The reason why i say if it sounds right is because the machine don't know the difference. if it was the motor you would hear a really loud hum before it stopped and then maybe it would start back up and hum some more. if your clothes are really heavy like dripping on your feet heavy. then you have a problem with your washer. Probably a transmission.

Dryer was running with full load of clothes. Heard a loud pop twice, ran back to the laundry room and smelled like something burning. Turned dryer off, and now it won't start back. Also, the very top of...

Well it sounds like a sound I have heard... forgetting that I had a cigarette lighter in my pocket and having it explode from the heat in the dryer. But you say you heard two loud pops?

Once everything cools down, check again and report back... does the dryer not turn on at all? Does the light come on when you open the door? Does it buzz when you push the start button? Stuff like that.

Maytag gas dryer runs, doesn't dry

Check in the hole where the screen goes for blockage. Many times debries falls in there when removing screen. It cant make it out of the vent so it builds up and clogs the vent.

Sounds like the belt has broken. You could probably also use new drum support rollers. Check out this site which shows how to change a dryer belt:

It's not a difficult job if you're comfortable working with hand tools.
