Question about GE Spacemaker Over-the-Range Microwave
My GE Spacemaker XL1800 stopped heating the other day, but is otherwise functional. It is model JVM1850CD 002 from May 2002. It just stopped heating with no warning. It does not appear to have any issues otherwise. No smells, noises or anything even slightly odd. Any ideas?
The controler board, or the power supply for the magnetron has probably failed, or a safety switch is not working properly. It is also possible that the controler board is in a protect mode because of a defect.
The magnetron uses very high voltage at very high current. There is a very large capacitor in the power supply for filtering the DC for the magnetron. This area of the microwave oven is very dangerous to work on. The power supply can be lethal if proper procedure is not complied to when working on it.
I strongly suggest that you do NOT attempt to service this yourself, unless you have the proper training, test instruments, tools, and service manuals to work on it.
After servicing, the tech is supposed to verify the operating power level, and do an EM (ElectroMagnetic) radiation leakage test. This is important after servicing this type of appliance.
Take the microwave oven in for an estimate. From this you can make an intelligent decision if you are going to have it serviced or replace it.
