Visual cd drive but when disk is placed -no D: drive (supposed to be erased)

Not familiar with computers, I purchased a used laptop from a stranger who I cannot contact now.
This IBM ThinkPad has space to the right side that I can pop open. When I try to put anything in and close -that's fine but I get error No D:drive. How can I reinstall it - had to have been there before right? Type 2628-CYU the rest I cannot make out.

Hi I got a set of recovery disk as I have ordered for ma hp notebook15 bt now I dont knw further what I have to do pls hlp me

Does your hp notebook15 have a CD or DVD drive? If so, when you get the recovery disk, put it into the CD/DVD drive. When you turn on your computer, it might start up using the recovery CD by default. If not, when your computer is starting, press the key described in the upper right hand of the screen when the computer is turning on. It says something like "Boot Options" Press the F?? key that is next to the option you want. For example, if the Boot options are next to the F10 key, press that key as the PC is starting up, then tell your laptop to boot, or start, from the CD/DVD drive.

Normally recovery disks erase your hard drive, and and setup your computer like it is fresh from the store. If you have any files that you want to keep like pictures, or other documents, take your hard drive out of your laptop, or have a computer professional do it for you, so that you don't erase all the files currently on your computer.

My daughters laptop forgot her hdd password,it will not let her get on laptop.tried to download erase hard drive ,cd player will not work .is there any way to download to a usb driver

I doubt you can erase the hard drive unless you can enter the hard disk password.
You can download the hard disk password removal program from these WEB sites, copy them to an USB memory stick and run the program on the laptop from the USB memory stick.

How to completely erase the hd

A hard drive is the brain of a computer. However, over time, that brain can become overworked and overly saturated with old software and outdated information. It becomes clogged and needs a fresh start. By erasing a hard drive, you can give your PC that fresh new beginning. With a few steps you can erase your hard drive manually, without the aid of expensive software.

Make sure your data is protected before you proceed. Whatever you do not save will be lost once you erase the drive. Use a CD or jumpdrive to save your information. Boot with a system disk. Before you continue to erase the hard drive, use the system to create a system disk. Use a 3-1/2 inch floppy disk and format it with the command "format a: /s"; this will create a bootable disk that contains system commands. Place it in the drive of your system and turn it off, then back on. Reformat the hard drive. Once you've booted with the system disk, type "format c: /s"; this will reformat the hard disk, virtually destroying the old hard drive you used to know. Depending on the of the drive, the formatting may take a fairly long time. Once the formatting is over, use the command "fdisk" to create partitions (which are logical sections for your hard drive's storage). Given the newer hard drives and operating systems of today, you can fdisk the drive and use all of the space. or if you dont have a floppy drive Download a disk wiping utility, such as Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) or KillDisk. DBAN is an open-source product, while KillDisk is available as a free, closed-source download. http://www.dban.org/ http://www.killdisk.com/ Once you download the file, save it to your computer somewhere easy to remember. Insert a blank CD into your computer and use a CD writing program to burn the hard disk wipe utility to the blank CD. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, there is a built-in utility that will perform this task. Back up the data on your computer that you want to save, if necessary. Insert the CD that you created into the computer that is attached to the hard drive you wish to erase. Power on the computer and choose the setup option to boot from the CD. Once you have booted from the CD, you will enter into the hard disk wipe utility. Depending on which utility you chose to use, this screen will vary, but the choice you want to select is to erase or wipe a disk drive. Choose the hard disk that you wish to wipe and confirm that you wish to permanently erase the data on it. Before confirming this, you may wish to physically double check and ensure that you are erasing the correct drive. Once you start the erasing process, it cannot be halted, paused or reversed. You will have to wait for anywhere from a few hours to even a few days for the process to complete, depending on how large your hard drive is.
or you could just reinstall another operating system this will automatically delete the old wrong one you installed.

Hope this helps.

How do i recover my system with back up disk

Insert the recovery CD in your CD-ROM,Set your BIOS to boot from CD-ROM,then follow the Instruction.

That's it.

Note : Restoring your system with Recovery disk will erase your entire Operating drive data.Make sure you backup your data (if you think it has  imporatnt data) before going for recovery.

You can use any Linux Live CD distribution. But if you are not familiar with Linux.Download "Hiren's Boot CD"

Here is the link

http://www.hirensbootcd.net/

Just clikc the download button and extract the file using Winzip or Winrar.

Burn the ISO files with Nero or MagicISO or PowerISO in a CD.

Boot the system using that CD (set the First Boot Device as CD-DVd ROM in BIOS).

Select "Start Mini Windows XP"

then copy all the important files to another media.

That's it.

Do i need a windows disk to reprogram my laptop if i erase everything off my laptop?

Yes.
However, given the terminology you are using, you better find someone that knows a lot more than you do about computers before performing this task.

Want to erase drive

If your Laptop is purchased with Recovery Disk, you can use that disk to restore the default setting of your laptop. It usually FORMAT your hardisk and erase all programs and files saved on your Hardisk. If Recovery Disk is not available then you can simply use your provided Windows Installer to format your Laptop and install a Fresh Windows on your Laptop, be sure to format the Whole Disk Drive to erase the files.
