Question about Sewing Machines
I am using a Bernina sewing machine and the needle will not move up and down. It will go side to side. It stopped while sewing and won't restart. I have checked all of the common troubleshooting things on the machine and none of them worked. The owner of the machine is on vacation in Ireland, so can't ask her. Help!!! I was using the zig zag stich on my machine at the edge of some fraying fabric to prepare for gathering. I had gotten about half way through the piece when the thread frayed and the needle stopped lowering itself to the fabric. Thinking it was just because of the thread, I rethreaded the machine and started to continue. The feed dog works as do the rest of the parts of the machine, but the needle will not go down. I was able to gget it to go down using the needle's hand wheel but it will not engage with the foot pedal.

If the machines motor is running but the needle isn't going up and down then the baste stitch finger is gummed up and needs to be serviced. This is a simple fix and it happens all the time on those machines. Take it to your local Bernina dealer for a standard service. Also if you really need it in a pinch try pushing up on the needle bar that sometimes will fix the problem but it will still need serviced.

SOURCE: Bernina 930 won't zig zag
You probably need to take it in to the shop, the needle position knob is bound up. It's worth spending the money, this is a good machine. You can try to soak everything with penetrating oil over night and carefully try to move the knob, you may be lucky and it will free up.

SOURCE: Zig Zag Stitch not working
THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.

Make sure that the machine is threaded correctly, that the needle is in
properly, that the bobbin case and bobbin are both inserted correctly
and that you are not using old thread.
Make sure that there is a new needle in the machine and loosen the top tension about a number
You need to carefully re-thread the machine.

Do you have a manual...if not White will email one to you at your request. Make sure the stitch width is slid or turned all the way over to as narrow as possible. Good luck.
