Rick and Edo, I found it was my settings in control panel. I've now got the machine to look for Wireless. Since then I've been able to work wirelessly. The only problem I have now is that I still need the modem and the wireless router so I still have cables trailing. Its a minor problem now so I'm very happy thank you for trying to sort me out.

It appears not all your device drivers have been installed, eg. wireless card or the wireless card has not been configured with your router's wireless settings, eg. SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption.

Two Questions Connecting with Belkin Wireless Router...

To answer the first question, please provide what kind of operating system you are using, and please provide the exact error message. Its probably just a caution/nag that you don't really have to worry about, but if you provide more information then so can we.
For the second question, you will need to setup the WEP on the laptop to get the laptop to connect to the router via wireless, regardless if it was used to setup the router, the wireless network is encrypted so it will need to be accessed by a computer(s) that have the key programmed into them. You can plug in the laptop into the hardwire Ethernet port for configuration, that is another option.

Very poor wireless range

Hello Wee Mich

You can check the documentation for your router HERE and see if there're any settings you can change.

Is there a lot of brick, concrete or metal in the walls of your home?

Have you tried using wireless repeaters?

They can improve things considerably under the right conditions.

The real issue is wireless radios work best LOS (line of site). So, even having a powerful antenna may not do much good if it can't get through the structures in your home.

Upgrading your wireless equipment, strategically locating your router, upgrading your devices' wireless antenae and using repeaters to effectively send signals 'round cornes can help a great deal.

Below are some common tips for improving your wireless network's performance.

Which d link pcmcia card will work with a d-link 514 wireless router?

Hello pig86

Your router is uses the 802.11b wireless standard. You can use a PC card that works w/ 802.11g or 802.11b. Those that are compatible w/ the 802.11g standard are also "backward compatible". In other words, they will also work w/ the older 802.11b wireless standard.

You don't have to purchase a PC card made by the same manufacturer as your router. You can mix and match manufacturers of your networking hardware/equipment just fine. They all adhere to the same industry standards.

As for choosing a specific PC card for your laptop, we'll need to know the make (manufacturer) and model of your laptop.

We will also need to know what operating system your are running on your laptop. (We want to make sure that drivers would be available for the PC card when running w/ your operating system.)

If you'd like us to help you w/ that, just post back here w/ that information and we'll be happy to.

For documentation on your router, please, go HERE.

No wireless

Hello Chantalallie

Is the laptop able to connect to the Internet wirelessly over other networks? (say at a coffee shop or Internet cafe, etc.)

(We want to pin down whether or not the issue is w/ your laptop or w/ the router.)

If the laptop is not functioning wirelessly at all now, make sure that the wireless radio button on your laptop has not been inadvertently placed in the OFF position. Where that button is located varies w/ ea. laptop. If you're not familiar w/ where it is, look closely along the sides and front of your laptop and above the keyboard (below the monitor).

Still on the assumption that your laptop's wireless radio is not working:
(A) Click on START
(B) Click on NETWORK CONNECTIONS
You should see a connection called "Wireless" or something similar.
(C) Check to see if that connection is DISABLED.
(D) If it is, right click on it and choose ENABLE

OK, now we'll await your answers before proceeding as doing so now would necessitate making assumptions regarding your equipment, operating system, etc. that may not be correct.

Thank you,
BJ

D-Link DIR-635 - wireless not working

Hello GEMD,

There may be different reasons why your wireless network is not working properly, let me ask you few questions in order to narrow down the problem.
  1. Is your D-Link DIR-635 brand new therefore we are talking about a new installation?
  2. Are you able to connect via wireless your two laptops in other locations?
  3. Could it be that the wireless has not been enabled yet in your router settings? To check this you will have to log on to your router by typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of Internet Explorer then select Admin as Username and leave the password field blank. Go to the Wireless Settings and Setup tab in order to enable  the "radio" signal.
  4. Could it be that an SSID has not been assigned yet to your wireless network?
You can download the complete product manual from the following page.
