Greetings. I have black ink cartridge in my printer. Every time I print I have to go in and change the setting from color to black in order for my document to print. There must be a way to set the default to black, but cannot figure it out, nor find any info in help on this.

Have you tried setting the color to black cartridge only. You may be printing the black with a combination of colored inks. I occasionally have a similar problem. Sometimes I can get the black to work by taking a paper towel dampened with distilled water and holding it against the cartridge print head until I see black ink coming out. Replace the cartridge and try printing again. If this doesn't work try a new cartridge and run through your Printer Settings, making sure they are all set properly.
With respect to Canon MP210 color usage during greyscale printing: Unfortunately, with many of the newer inkjet printer models & printer drivers, printing in greyscale actually consumes more color ink than normal draft printing. If you wish to save on color ink, it is suggested to do one of the following as available in your specific printer driver/software:
-Print in Normal - Draft mode (or super draft if available), plain paper.
-Print in Black & White mode only* - Draft mode on plain paper (typically this is the best way to save on ink/printing costs).
-For internet page printing, print using CleanPrint (3rd party software for printing most internet-based content from all major internet browsers. NOTE: not affiliated with Inkjet411):http://www.formatdynamics.com/cleanprint-4-0/
-Keep printer on at all times; power up cycles typically consume large amounts of ink (per Consumer Reports, Aug 2013 issue).
* Most printer models will still consume a small percentage of color ink due to normal ink/printer maintenance, such as between job 'spitting'. The purpose is to ensure the printhead is maintained to avoid clogging.
Regarding Canon PG-30 or CL-31 cartridge repurchase or ink cartridge refilling, if you unable to find a retail / refill store close to you and you are trying to cut ink costs, may we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA, have a high reliability rating, come with a 1-year warranty and provide free shipping for all orders above $20 (available to US residents only).

Remove your current empty cartridge from your Dell printer. Turn on your printer and lift the cover and top half of the unit. You can suspend it in place by lifting the blue plastic lever and securing it to hold up the top of the printer. At this point the ink cartridges should move to the center of the printer and be easy to access. Follow the instructions locate on your printer to remove the cartridges. You can do this by pressing on the blue tab to remove the colored cartridge or the black tab to remove the black cartridge. Once you press the tab, the cartridge cover will pop open. Carefully pull out the exposed cartridge from it’s setting. Save the empty cartridge so it can be refilled. Remove the sticker from the newly refilled Dell ink cartridge. Follow the directions on the opened printer to insert the cartridge. Hold the cartridge so the writing is on the top and the ink spot is on the bottom. Gently push it into the opened setting until it is securely in place. Close the cover of the cartridge holder by pressing down on it gently until it clicks into place. Remember that the black cartridge goes into the black setting and the color cartridge goes into the blue setting. Close the top of the printer. You will hear the ink cartridges move back into place.
Test your newly refilled Dell ink cartridge and load your printer with paper.Print a document so either in color or black and white (depending on the type of cartridge you had refilled). Review your printed document to make sure the color is consistent and you are pleased with the outcome. Repeat whenever you run out of ink.
When using refilled
print cartridges, the Estimated Ink level and the Printer Status Window
may indicate that the print cartridge is out of ink. Either continue to
use the print cartridge until print quality degrades, or replace the
print cartridge with a new HP print cartridge.
The methods of replacing the ink cartridge of the printer follows here:

The printer ink carriage will automatically goes to center
Once the carriage is in the center, the printer was ready to replace the ink.
Pull the down slowly the ink tank off the carriage..

Close the printer cover and it now ready to printer.

are you sure you've attached a colored print cartridge? Because if you don't have a colored print cartridge, the printer won't print out colored documents. OR, if you DO HAVE a colored cartridge, check if it still has ink. Have it refilled if it's got none. OR... if you got a cartridge, and has ink in it, the settings of the printer itself might be set to: black and white or greyscale. You can change this setting at the settings, though! good luck!
start control panel printer and fax right click your printer, choose properties go tab by tab and look for print quality and then try something like this choose econo mode, or ink saving mode to start.
try to print in grayscale mode and use only the black ink cartridge.
that should be your new default, and you don~t have to change it from winthin other programs
Removed the colored ink cartridge, press the colored output (where the colored ink came out) to a tissue to test if the there is an ink inside the cartridge, if there is none appears the cartridge is now damage, have a new one.
Apparently, if you hold the "resume button" (the one next to the power button) for about five seconds after you get the message saying to replace the color ink cartridge the machine starts printing. I did this after I went to "maintenance" under "preferences" and changed ink to "black only." At first that alone did not work, but after trying the resume button for 5 secs it worked okay.
as u have ran out of ink you cant print anymore... you have to replace a new ink cartridge.... this is because when u print something, the colors will get mixed to print the exact color.... even if u are printing only in black, some other colors wil get mixed to produce the black color on the paper... so u need to change the ink cartridge.... u cannot run with a blank filled ink cartridge.... and the selection of your printer is very good...
