Question about Digital Cameras

6 Answers

We have a CoolPix L3 that is not very old nor has it been used (and or misused); perhaps 14 months old. Serial No. 30649827. The telescoping lens has tended to get stuck in a closed position. After installing FRESH new batteries, I gently tapped the camera body against my other hand and the lens opened but continued to move in and out. Sometimes it would stay open but not at its maximum position. Furthermore a message was displayed; LENS ERROR.What do you suggest we do. Is it repairable?

The lens has to be unlocked, thereby meanig that we need physically open the camera and check the three rollers which control the lens movement inside the camera.

Be sure that the camera has never been dropped before or some incidents like happen that make your camera working in malfunctiion.. A mechanical error on the part have occured which make your camera lens not work properly...

It possible to be repair but be aware or get ready for the service will you pay to repair the cam.., coz it sometimes almost the price of having a brand new..

Enjoy

A piece of foreign material is most likely stuck in the lens and needs to be removed or the motor/gears are malfunctioning.

Easily repairable though hard to do if you are not familiar with cameras.

I would take it to a camera shop and have them look at it. It will be well worth it. If you wish to do it yourself, then make sure you know where everything goes and carefully start by removing the outer panel. If you want me to help along the way, please let me know, I would be glad to help.

Thank you and good luck.

Hi,

Well that was the only solution to fix this lens error which you have already tried. The only solution to fix tis problem is to get it repaired or replace it if it is still under warranty or you can buy a new one if it is not under warranty.

The repair may cost between $150-$175
Anyways i'll let you know if there is any other solution.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

    Hi,

    Please try out these steps:

Fix #1: Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fresh set of batteries back in and turn the camera on.

    Fix #2:
Remove the batteries, then remove the memory card. Then install the new
batteries, when you turn it on it should come back to life. Error E30
means you don't have a memory card installed, so turn it off, slip in
the memory card and turn it on one last time.

    Fix #3:
Insert the cameras AV cable, and turn the camera on in picture review
mode. Have no idea why this would work, except that quite a few people
have reported some success with it.

    Fix #4:
Place the camera flat on its back on the kitchen table, pointed at the
ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time
press the power-on button. The idea is that the camera will try to
autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens
barrel guide pins in their slots.

    Fix #5: Blow
compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of
blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens.
Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat”
setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum cleaner.

    Now
we're entering into the realm of potentially damaging your camera in
conducting the fix. Take care when conducting the following two fixes.

    Fix #6:
Repeatedly tap the padded/rubber usb cover on a hard surface with the
intent of dislodging any particles that may be jamming the lens. A lot
of people have reported success with this method. HOWEVER, there is
some potential for damaging or dislodging internal components with this
method, such as unseating ribbon cables.

    Fix #7:
Try forcing the lens. Many people have also reported success with this
method. HOWEVER, there's obviously some potential for damaging your
camera by using this method. Variations include pulling, pushing,
rotating or twisting on the lens barrel while hitting the power button.
Another variation includes looking for uneven gaps around the lens
barrel, and then pushing on the lens barrel side that has the largest
gap. While doing these, listen for a click that indicates that the lens
barrel guide pins have reseated in their guide slots. If you hear this
click, immediately stop and try the camera. The following photo
illustrates unseated guide pins that would cause a lens error.

The lens mechanism is jammed / haveing trouble. its not repairable by yourself. These cameras are so tight inside its hard assemble back.

Id recommend contacting coolpix or your dealer / local professional for repairs, there is also a repair service finder on the front page of fixya if dont know where to get service.

It is repairable.

You need to unlock the lens

You get the lens error message either when the lens are jammed, or when the camera fails to reset after a lens problem. Try first pulling out gently the lens with your fingernail while you turn camera on, the tapping solution often helps.
After pulling out the lens you may need to take out batteries once more, to reset the camera.
If this does not work you may need to open the lens shutter unscrewing the metal cover, this may be a little tricky.
