Yea I had the exact same problem with my Lexmark X1185
Was very lucky I didnt throw out the clear strip thingie before learning what it was :)

Anyways the strip itself passes through a shader sensor located on the rear or the cartridge carrier.( see pic 1 ) .and is required by the cartridge carrier to calculate its position. Without it the cartridge slams into the side of the printer & fails to work.

Fixing it is pretty easy using these photo's I took whilst repairing my X1185 with the same problem. It's cause was the tension spring (circled yellow below) had just uncurled and let go of the sensor strip

Btw... to ensure you have the strip facing the right way ,

the end with the arrow connects to the spring ,it should be right way around facing you & pointing up.

the longer rectangle hole should rest in the small metal "post" .

Is there a way to open the paper path on Canon PIXMA MX340

There is a thin (1/4"wide) plastic strip running across the width in front of and below the drive belt. This is part of the optical encoder that tells the print-head where it is. If you look closely, there are fine black vertical lines on this strip. If the strip gets a piece of crud on it, you get an error during the start-up sequence. Gently clean this strip with a damp lint-free tissue. This also fixed a gap in the printing running lengthwise (not across the page like a clogged head).

Check printer 5100 whaat is this problem and how do i fix it

Ink buildup. The B&W and color cartridges abut and shoot ink through a thin metal strip with a tiny ****, visible when opening the unit. The strip rests right up against the cartridges. A grayish strip where you'll see a dark line running across. That's ink. Carefully remove this ink with Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Additionally, the printer head cleaning pads on farthest right side are caked with ink. Manual advises to replace these parts. They can be cleaned with Q-tip and Rubbing alcohol also.

HOW DO I FIX A SHORT CIRCUIT ON A LEXMARK X1185 PRINTER?

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.

The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.

The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test.

To self-test the printer, please follow the steps given below:

1. Power the printer off.
2. Press and hold the "Paper Feed" button.
3. While still holding the "Paper Feed" button, press and release the "Power" button. Continue holding the "Paper Feed" button.
4. When the printer starts pulling paper, release the "Paper Feed" button. It should print a test page at this point.
5. Power the printer off, as this test is continuous.

The self-test should at least print out a set of either a solid black or solid color bars, if not both (if you have a printer with both color and black installed simultaneously). Should this test fail, please try it again without cartridges installed. If the self-test still fails to take paper in and make sounds like the carrier is moving across the paper, this is a hardware issue, and the printer will require service. If the self-test completes without any cartridges installed, run the self-test again with only a color cartridge installed (If you have both black and color cartridges, after this test, run the test again with just the black cartridge installed). If you find that either cartridge causes the self-test to fail, please let us know.

If the self-test prints, but has lines or smudges or other print quality issues, please let us know. This includes any print quality issues - we need to know if the problems you have with your black or color are based in the printer, or communications with your computer, or the computer's software.
If the self-test prints your test bar(s) clearly, the printer hardware is not at fault.

If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.

If you cannot repair the strip, please contact Lexmark tech support.

Hardware error 0504

Thank you for contacting to Fixya regarding your printer error message 0504.

I would like to inform you that error 0504 refers to encoder strip.

If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.
Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.

Next, try to print the self test.

Couple options, If printer will go into diagnostics mode take look at the print-head heater temps, if you cant get it into diagnostics, theres 2 posibilities, either the print-head has failed, or the Electronics module has failed, make sure printer is on its OWN DEDICATED POWER, NO EXTENSION CORDS, NO PLUG STRIPS and make sure its not sharing power with a coffee pot on the same curcuit. (or other power hungry office equiptment) If you get a Xerox Service pro on site he/she will probably have to plug a laptop into the engineering port to tell you whats wrong, if it cant be diagnosed from the front pannel.

LOADING TAPE INTO A BROTHERS P-TOUCH

I'm on my second machine since December. Neither P-Touch would feed the white tape, the other layers bunch up inside the machine. Called Brother, and they were no help (indeed not much interested in my problem), except to suggest I clean the rollers with alcohol/q-tip. This action did result in the tape feeding, but not properly as I now get an unusable label strip with all three layers, and printing on the clear layer backed by black layer. POS if you ask me; it is going back to the store.

Black strips when printing

I'm having the same problem, with the black strip printing on the back of each copy i make... Its very annoying. the circlular lil rubber piece that helps the paper feed out of the machine is wet with black ink. theres about 5 lil rubber things that feed the paper out and ONLY one of those seems to be wet with black ink, so everytime i print, it appears on the opposite side of my document. If someone knows how to fiz this problem, PLEASE PLEASE get in contact with me. My name is Maria M. and you can reach me by e-mail smilz922@aol.com

Copying with page feed results in a vertical line on every page

There must be a strip of glass about one inch wide, next to
the large glass. There is the problem !
Clean that strip thourougly. When you use the feeder the pages
are scanned thru the small strip of glass.
