Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

Problem restarting, "press r"

I don't know what happened but when I turned on my computer it says on a black screen there is a problem and I need to press r to repair. I tried pressing r at every time I could but nothing happened. When I inserted the computer's CD nothing happened either.

I tried both and they did not work. For "Safe Mode," it started to load but then the same message came up- "Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system You can attempt to repair the file by using the CD" When I do "Last known good configuration," the same thing happens-all I get is that message.

OK, I would do that but whatever I do, whether it be rebooting it, starting it in safe mode or last good configuration, it brings me back to the "press r" prompt. So, I cant do anything without getting the prompt, and can only get to the Windows Boot Options screen.

  1. Start the laptop
  2. when the logo screen turns black start pressing F8 a few times.
  3. A Windows Boot Options screen should show on the screen
  4. If you see the Windows Logo (the normal thing when Windows loads, then press reset and try again
  5. At the Windows Boot Options screen select "Last known good configuration" and press Enter twice
It "should" now load normally, if not then..
  1. Replace step 5 above with "Safe Mode" and see if that loads all the way through. If so, then restart and see if its OK now.
If not, then post back with any error messages and we can look at something else.

Do you understand any Dos commands?

Lets play in Windows Dos =)

Put your Windows Cd in and boot it. when it asks what you want to do select R for recovery console. It will drop you to a cursor in Windows Dos (I am assuming that is where you were getting to before by presing R)

Type this exactly pressing enter after each line.

    cd system32\config

    ren system system.old
    copy c:\windows\repair\system
Hit the reset button and try to boot normally

If you have your Windows CD, pop that into the drive and boot from it. You will get to a section of theinstall that asks the same thing. Select R there and it will load it off the cd instead of your HDD.

The computer starts but, when you press a key, nothing happens.

You are probably in Standby mode and have a software or

resource conflict. When this happens, turning the power on

returns you to the problem instead of restarting the system.

To clear the condition, press Ctrl, Alt, and Del simultaneously

then select Shutdown, then Restart to restart the computer.

Well, I don't know what your model number is or how old your computer is, but I also have a Compaq Presario Notebook and there is currently a lawsuit going on something about the graphics/video cards in some laptops/notebooks being defective. You would have to go on their website and check the list of computers to see if yours is involved or not. I know that visual and video problems were happening as well as network adapter problems.

Hi. Try these simple steps: Restart your computer and press F8 when you see the Dell Screen. In the advanced Windows Option, choose Last Know-Good Configuration and press Enter. If nothing happens and you didn't boot to windows, you may need to reset the system back to factory image.

To do that, Do the first 2 steps if you're using Vista. If you're using Windows XP, on the Dell logo, Press Ctrl+F11 to boot from the recovery partition. Follow the instructions to recover system back to factory image.

Hope it helps!
