You should be able to. you will not hurt the furnace if you put filter in and watch the operation of heater. If the heater gets to hot it will trip out on high limit, then cool down and start again if air flow is restricted to much. The filter will need changed more often than the normal one

Limit switch is open

An abnormal high temperature will cause a limit switch to open on a furnace. I would inspect/clean filter, clean blower compartment, clean blower motor wheel and make sure the motor is running at the proper speed.

Cleaning instructions

Dirt is the biggest enemy of your furnace. It can waste fuel and drastically lower efficiency. Dirt affects all three basic components of your furnace, so cleaning is the most important part of regular maintenance. The three parts of the furnace should be cleaned: the filter system, the blower, and the motor.

The furnace filter should be replaced or cleaned at the beginning of the heating season and about once a month during periods of continuous use. To check the filter, take it out and hold it up to the light. If it looks clogged, replace it with a new filter of the same type and size regardless of the length of time it has been used.

Step 4: Clean blower assembly, belts and pulleys to blower, and motor housing. Cleaning blower is critical if furnace has a squirrel-cage fan, because openings in this type of blower often become clogged with dirt. To clean blower, remove panel that covers filter to gain access to blower or panel on front of furnace. This panel may be slip-fit on hooks or held by series of retaining screws. Access to inside of blower is usually gained by sliding out fan unit, which is held on track by screws.

If power cord to fan assembly is not long enough to permit fan unit to slide all the way out, disconnect cord. Mark wire connections first so you'll be able to reassemble unit correctly. With toothbrush, clean each fan blade and spaces between blades. Then, with vacuum cleaner hose, remove all dirt and debris loosened by brushing. Vacuum belts and pulleys. Wipe motor housing clean to prevent heat buildup in motor.

Sounds like limit switch issue. Furnace heats up, high temp limit switch opens, fan will stay on. GMP model is older and do not have the codes.
May be over fired, have airflow problem, to cause the limit to open.
Next time before shutting off power, try to find the limit, it has two wires that connect to a 1.5 x 2 inch card mount to the furnace fire wall. tap on it and see if the blower stops. If so replace the limit.

Both fans running at startup 4 flashes on control board. no ignition

Hello, the most likely cause for this is a open limit switch on your furnace. A limit switch is there to protect the furnaace from overheating. Most causes are either a dirty filter, dirty blower wheel, or the blower motor not running up to speed, anything that cuts down on the airflow will cause the high limt switch to open. Check filter, blower wheel for dirt, and make sure the blower motor is running properly and not dragging.

I have a Rheem heat pump and a Honeywell thermostat. I let my air filters get too dirty, and they restricted the air flow so the system shut off. I have replaced the air filters but the upstairs doesn't...

You may need to replace the furances high limit switch. This is located abvove the burrners with the top frot door off. It has two wires going into it. The furance probably was cycling on this switch which automatically resets it self. The thermal dics wears out and starts to trip at lower temperatures. You can temporally jump across the switch and check the furances opreration but do not leave this switch jumperd because it is a safty.

I have a dyno glo rmc-fa100dlx forced air heater. It will light and work for a few minutes, up to about 5, then it will stop heating and the fan will keep blowing. any ideas? thanks!

If the unit comes on and runs but then shuts down, that sounds like an indication of a high limit trip.

Most, if not all, furnaces have high limit switches that keep a constant check on the temp inside the furnace or air handler. On most systems, once this high limit switch has been made (got to hot), the limit switch breaks control voltage to the heating device (strips, gas, fuel, etc.etc..). The blower motor continues to run until the high limit has dropped in temp and reset itself.

On some models, the high limit is a manual reset, meaning you need to reset the switch yourself or shut the unit off and then back on to reset it.

Check all filters and replace as necessary. Check the coils and fan blades for dirt build-up and cleanliness. Check motor belt (if applicable). If all these fail to solve the problem, then your issue either lies within the blower motor itself not moving enough air for proper heat transfer. Or the high limit switch itself is failing.

Where is the location of the air filter on a dayton fuel trimmer gas furnace and what type does it take?

The filters are usually located inside the furnace above or below the blower motor, inside of a compartment door. That is only if you do not have filters in the grills inside the house. The type would be hard to say, but when you find them (theres usually 2 or more), they will have a size on them and you can pick them up at Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, etc. Hope this helps.

Furance won't lite

The first thing i would do is turn thermostat down and turn power off wait for a few minutes then turn power back on and then thermostat back up. If it has a ignition module then there should be a blower motor. It should come on then a pressure switch that should click then the ignitor should glow or spark. there should be a round glass circle that you can look through to see the ignitor
