Question about Sony VAIO VGN-S460 Notebook

Upgrading VAIO laptop HDD

My almost 3-yr old Vaio has been fresh installed like 9 times already due to freezing or getting stuck somewhere while rebooting. The HD is making this terrible noise (or may be the fan) that I think it's starting to fail. I would like to replace the HD with my own fresh HD but I don't have any discs (esp XP OS disc) to begin with, and for some reason it always failed everytime I try to create a VAIO Recovery CD kit. I've asked Sony for assistance and they're offering me a Recovery Kit for $20 or a fresh HD from them for about $465 (what a pitiful support they provide). Anyway, any ideas on how I can initiate getting my HDD replaced? The idea of cloning the old HDD and the new one, would that work perfectly, and how? I appreciate any support on this one! -- Jojo (Email address: joscky63@mail.com)

I have sony vaio pcg-81114L laptop.but now its getting stuck?

Stuck?

If you mean while working and just freeze (and before never did, none new software or hardware installed), the problem would be with the cooling and the CPU overheats.

Try using compressed air or just blow at the air vent opening (install RM clock management to check the CPU temperature)

Run CHKDSK, if you see a message "The drive contains one or more unrecoverable problems", you need a new hard drive.

If you cant get on to Windows try a fresh install. If that fails buy a new HDD should fix it.

What is the largest HDD compatible on a Sony Vaio VGN FS630/w laptop What max HDD size can I upgrade now? Currently my laptop has 80GB HDD.

This is a 5 year old system which is ancient in todays world. Upgrading the disk to 160gb would help but that is about the top end disk size. I'd consider a newer system. It would cost in the $75-100 range. Your disk is ATA which I don't think got larger than 160.
Don't forget you need to CLONE the existing disk to the new one which can be a pain if you don't have the correct tools.

Computer will not start it only says that is upgrading and stuck on part 3 of 3

Some of those upgrades take hours to install and give no indication anything is in process.

Try doing a ctrl-alt-del to get to the application listing and cancelling the running program.

Vaio VGN-FZ340e freezes without reason!

Possibly you have a programme running in the background that is causing the freezes, could be a screensaver. i think at sometime microsoft will issue an update that will fix this problem.

Sony Vaio VGN-SZ460N Freezes during Full Recovery

Probably a memory problem even though it doesn't show up on a memory test. Enter the bios and select the option for default setup, "not the optimized setup". Also if you have more then one memory module, remove one and try the install, if you have two try using the one you removed first as the only memory module during the install process. If you have any cards plugged into the computer, remove them all before starting the install. Also all usb cables. Make the system as simple as you can for the new install.
