Can't open files copied to my Seagate Free Agent Go

Hi, I have a Seagate Free Agent Go. My desktop it an XP and so is my Labtop.
I was attemtping to back up my computer so I was putting all of my files onto the Free agent.
Most of my files on my computer are saved in Word/Works. I have some important files just in Word. I also have some PDF files with books and things. I also have a large mailing list as well in an address book.
This is what I did. I opened my documents on my computer. Then clicked select all, then copied the docs to the Free Agent. Then I plugged the Free Agent into my labtop, also a XP, and attempted to open the files on my laptop. When I went to open the files I copied to my Free Agent labtop this is what happened.
Only the files that were saved as PDF on my computer, stayed PDF. The rest of the files image look different after saving them to the Seagate.
Some of the files I copied look like regular files I see on Works, but when you scroll down the file image take on different looks. When you click on it to open and window comes up that says,
"Adobe Reader could not open ----- because it is either not a supported file type or becuase the file has been corrutped (for example, it was sent as an email attachemnt and wasn't correctly decoded)"
That is what it says.
These files were originaly on my desktop and saved in either Word or Works. Once I copied them to the Seagate they were changed and now the little files you go to open say, 'A' on the front or 'Adobe', and some say PDF. If they say PDF on the file they will open. If they look like a plain vanilla file they will open.
But all of the other files that say A or Adobe on them will NOT OPEN.
I get the "you can't open this file", error. What am I doing wrong? How can I copy the files from my computer to my Seagate in a way so that I can open them on other computers? It doesn’t help me if after I save all of my work and can not access the files I’ve saved.
Help? Thanks

Ok, install Office onto your laptop and see how it goes. Don't be too panic striken Microsft in general allow one copy of the same program to be running on a desktop and a laptop at the same time on the same license.
It's a home/work thing, Laptop goes to work, desktop stays at home and you can't be using them both right =)

How do I transfer files to my seagate free agent?

Just left-click the file or folder you want to copy, choose copy.

Open My Computer and find the external drive, double click, once the folder opens just right-click and choose Paste.

That's pretty much it....or you could also drag files / folders to the drive.

Hope this helps.
