Some process running in the background is not letting the system shut down. Use task manager to kill unnecessary processes before pressing turn off. If it shut downs then try to locate the process using taskmanager which is causing this problem.

Let me know if it helps.

Hi, thanks for the advice but when I was waiting for a reply I went into msconfig, turned off all start up options and tried - everything was OK. I then went through a process of turning things on until I found the culpret. He has recently installed iolo virus scanner and that was what was causing the problem.

Thanks for your help anyhow. Have a good weekend.

How to reset my computer back to factory settings?

Hi there,
Which is your Operating system?

Copy all your files and documents to an external storage device.
If it is windows XP: Start the computer and the moment you do that, start Tapping F8 Key you shall see Advanced boot option. Select Safe mode with Networking and press enter and next option is to choose the Operating system First will be Windows Xp now you need to select the second one and press enter IF you dont have the second option then we might need a Disk.

For Windows Vista & Windows 7.
1. Copy all your files and documents to an external storage device.
2. Shut down the computer.
3. Turn the PC back on and hit the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Option Screen appears.
4. Click "Repair Your Computer" if you are not already on it and then press ENTER
5. choose your country and click OK
6. On the "System Recovery Options Screen" click "Restore Application" which is the last option.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions
8. When prompted, click on "Full Factory Recovery"
9. "Next"
10. Click "Yes"
11. you will notice for a while it seems like nothing is happening, give it some time.
12. After some minutes, recovery will complete and you click "Finish"

Hope this helps!!

I cant seem to get into safe mode on my comp

When you first turn the computer on Keep tapping F8 if that doesnt work Try F5.
If you can get into Windows then you can make the computer boot into Safe mode next time you start it up using MSConfig.
If you have XP you will need to Start > Run > msconfig.exe Windows Vista / 7, Start > (Type in the start search box under All Programs) msconfig, you will notice it come up and the top of the box > Click on it and when prompted by UAC click Continue / Yes.
Now that you are in MSConfig under the general tap select Diagnostic Startup, press apply then OK, you will not be prompted to restart the computer. Restart and it will put you into Safe Mode.

My Toshiba laptop satellite running windows xp isn't booting at all,it stops and gives me a message that windows didnt start successfully a recent change in s/w or h/w might have coursed this.

Hi friend, As you have mentioned that the laptop is not booting up, in that case what i would recommend is that as soon as you turn on the system press the key "F8" to get into the Advanced Boot Options menu.
In that menu select the option "Last Known good Configuration" and wait if it works or not.
Otherwise,
In the same menu select the option " Safe Mode" If it boots up into the windows try the following steps to restore the system to previous date
1) Click on Start 2) Goto All Programs 3) Select Accesories > System tools> System Restore 4) In the new window select the option "Restore the system to previous date" 5) Select Next and you will see some restore points created. 6) Select the latest restore point that is a week before 7) Click Next 8) System Restore will start 9) Follow the instructions and restart the system in normal mode that is without pressing F8 this time.

I can not find the icon in the start menu to initiate the system recovery option

Hi,

If it is windows xp then the recovery option will be under pc help and tools ,this you can get it by clicking on start ???all programs ???pc help and tools. However if you are not able to find this option then simply turn the computer off and then disconnect all the external devices along with the internet cable and then as soon as you turn the computer on tap the f10 key repeatedly and then when you get the recovery page click on ok .Once you get the page where it has the advance option click on it and then select destructive recovery and then click next the recovery will start .

If you have windows vista then go to start and in the search bar type recovery manager and then click on it to start the recovery else instead of the f10 key tap the f11 key and then follow the same instruction as for the XP OPERATING SYSTEM.

Hope this helps you ,all the best
