Toshiba 57" Rear Projection (57HX83) Mnfg. Jan 2004 Chasis No. TAC0355 In the left quadrant of the screen, I am beginning to see split and distorted image. For example, when I display my cable programming listing there is a white vertical box 5" wide running top to bottom. In the upper left quadrant of the TV, if you follow the both edges of this box from the top you will begin to see a distort lines that turn into a "bell curve image" that is pink on the left side of the box and green on the right side of the box. By the middle of screen the distortion goes away. The issue is not apparent in the other 3 quadrants. What is the issue? How can it be fixed? Would it need a repair man to fix?

I can access the manual convergence mode via my remote, is this not the same? I believe it is. I was able to manually adjust the convergence, but the upper left quadrant still had a white cross that a slight pink edge on left side and green on the other side. I tried to adjust each number that did not display a white cross (or that needed it). The issue still persisted after this adjustment. I could not access the convergence mode via your instruction, or I was taken to the same screen as via the remote. Do you have any other suggestions? If the Convergence IC is out would I have asymmetric distortion in the upper left quadrant? Any thing else I should consider and do you have a sense how much this would cost to repair?

By providing serial number to the Toshiba link you gave me, it was determined my TV does not relate to this recall. My serial number is 15316308

Changing the MDCU may solve your problem. with the screen convergence .... I would still suggest the best resolution is to take to repair guy, who can put in parts like the MDCU to check if the problem is resolved . Toshiba service centres can be found in the following link
    http://webmail.tacp.com/service/servcntr...$$Search?OpenForm

    additional info :
Apart from adjusting the screen using the remote did you open the TV to have a look inside

To set up the convergence you need to use the service setup procedure. If you have not experience in servicing tv it may be better to as a technician to perform the procedure.
Here is the service convergence procedure:

    To get into Service mode:

    Turn your TV on.

Press MUTE on your remote and release.

Press down MUTE on your remote
again and hold. While holding, press the MENU button on your TV set's
    front panel. Release both buttons.

An "S" should appear on your screen. Press MENU again on your TV.

    Now you're in service mode.

    To get into Designer mode:

    From Service Mode, press RECALL
on remote and hold. While holding, press the MENU button on the TV’s
front panel. A "D" should appear on the screen.

    You can scroll through
settings by pressing channel UP/DOWN on your TV. You can change
settings by using the volume control on the remote.

To exit Service or Designer mode, turn off the power.

Record all current settings before doing anything else!!!

    To get into convergence mode:

    Get into Service mode, then

Hit '7' to bring up the convergence grid.

    Buttons 100, 0, and ENT
control which gun you want to turn off (if you want to align the red to
the green without seeing the blue gun and other variations).

    2=up, 8=down, 4=left, 6=right, 3=change gun to converge, 5=converge that point.

    To exit convergence mode you
press 7 once and your screen should look like it's imploding then
return to normal and then you press 7 to get back into regular service
    mode.

If the procedure above still cannot fix the problem, you definitively have to call a repairman, he will probably need to test your convergence ICs , and eventually replace one of them.

As I already said, if the convergence setup procedure still cannot fix the problem, you definitively
have to call a repairman, he will probably need to test your
convergence ICs , and eventually replace one of them.

The green convergence IC is defective. this is not a task for the
consumer to do. It requires experience in testing, soldering and
unsoldering components on convergence board, and knowledge of safety issues concerned. You should consult an experienced repairman to service your TV.

If you really want to DIY your tv, you need to test ICs on convergence boards. Also need to test capacitors for continuity. Being the problem in a corner it can easily be a capacitor.
An easy repair may be changing the whole convergence board.

About repair cost it depaends on what is broken and where you are located.
Here in UK it ranges from £50 ($80) (no parts replacement to) to £.200/250 ($4000/450) if you have to replace the whole board

Toshiba 57HX83 57 in. Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

With the back off you should be able to see the three large round lens this set should have---black cylinders with a glass lens--if real dirty they can cause picture to look darker and dull---I presume same with DVD player etc connected to rear input.

the lens point up so get dusty, the mirror points down at a angle and rarely needs cleaning.

If the TV looks zig zag or scrambled and its moving aroudn the screen the hypermodule has failed.
If however it looks 3D or warped and is not moving around the convergence is the issue. You can get DIY repair kits including all parts, instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Does this tv need to have a digital tuner attached to it? or is it ready to use?

You need a HD cable box or go Satellite. That is a monitor set with NO tuner. FYI, the older sets that say HD Ready means No tuner. Salesman jumped all over that one when it came out. They would say Yep! it's HD ready and then jump into all the features to side track the customer, it was terrible.

if the screen is that bad, you may want to try with some commercial available polish for glass or plastic, like plast-x. you can get that in any auto parts store or your local walmart...
