Same problem here. Regardless of setting Manual, SCN, Auto, or ISO settings, when I zoom into a subject, both the LED and pictures are fuzzy.
When shooting wide angle, everything is fine.

My brother in law has the exact same model and we compared settings. His does not have this issue.

I have what sounds like the same issue, but nothing is "stuck". Mine is about 17 months old and it just started doing this last weekend. One day it worked, the next day (and ever since) it's broken.

The camera has never been dropped. Sometimes, if you push the button half-way down, you see it go past the proper focus and settle with the picture fuzzy.

In my case I think it has less to do with the zoom and more to do with the physical distance from the subject, though zoom is definitely worse. I even tried manual infinity setting and scenery is still fuzzy. It won't focus right.

I sent my camera off to Canon and they repaired it under warranty for free. It took about a week for them to fix and cost me about $10 to ship with postage, insurance, etc. There was some issue with the optical zoom getting stuck. If your camera has this problem, I would recommend sending it into Canon for repair. Worse case, if it is not broken - you are only out shipping costs. I was lucky since by brother-in-law and I were able to compare camera's side by side and then I knew for certain that it wasn't a user setting.

Hi

Make sure you are pressing the button half way and getting the 'beep' that the camera is ready to take the picture before pressing the button all the way down.

Also make sure you have good lighting conditions and use the flash if needed.

Last, make sure you are still in optical zoom and not digital... I would suggest turning off digital zoom, I don't recommend using it at all.

Hopefully this helps..

I believe this is normal, that is that you can only do one thing at a time, you may have slow memory, getting faster may help speed things up.

Canon SD850 IS showing "unidentified image" after pic is taken

we have just experienced both of the above problems. We are using 2G SD card from Kingston. After about 400 pictures set to mdeium resolution we get many pictures with the ? mark unidentified image. I see that each image takes up about 2M of space but the image information is not stored so you can not open the file. Also other images have the shaded problem as above.

does anyone have any ideas about this. Is it the camera or the SD memory? We just bought the camera about 3 weeks ago and are now thinking of returning it

Lenses

Your camera's problem is with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
