Hi, I just bought a refurbished netvista pent4 2.4g. from computer geeks. it has no O.S. or drivers. My question is, should I start from scratch and install my old winxp home,(then go online and get all the updates, sp2,etc....). Oh it's a 40g hd., or take the 10g hd from my OLD Gateway G6-400 (she still runs great but slooow), to get up and running quick? Mabye clone the 10 to the 40? The Ibm should be here tuesday. Just trying to get ahead of the game a bit. Any forseeable problems??
Thanks
Chuck

Thanks ddugard. I don't know what will be on the new hd. I'd kinda like to keep the old Gate. running tho. I agree about the junk & partitions, for what I do I don't need them. When I get the IBM running I'll format the Gate & probly donate to the schools or someone who needs it. Thanks again.

You will have to do a clean install of XP for the IBM anyway. It would be the same thing as trying to swap engines from 2 different cars.
The problem lies in the way Windows has setup the other drive with all the information provided by the motherboard etc in the Gateway, as opposed to all the new information that will be on the IBM and it's associated hardware.
A motherboard is not a single component, but many components all layed out onto a single space. Things like sound, network, hard drive controllers memory controllers etc are always different.
The only time you should worry about cloning is if you have multiple computers with the same hardware.
At the same time, this is the perfect oppotunity to drop to your local PC shop, grab a nice big HDD (they are cheap as chips at the moment) put that into your IBM and use the 40 gig HDD as a second drive for the Gateway.
Hope that will help you decide =)

If your old copy of win xp is not being used by any other computer then reformat the entire drive with xp. Also make sure that your drive is not divided into 2 or 3 sections. All updated will be available on the windows update site. The reason that I prefer tostart from scratch is Everything is new with no lingering Junk programs in the background. I was a School Principal for 20 years, and during that time I always had to beg for cash or pc donations. Many of the pcs that we got had very private info on the hard drive. I would run "Format" three times before putting the pc in a classroom. Do the same if you donate to a school. After the third format Nothing is recoverable. Your info will be private.
