Question about Canon BJC-85 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Loss of printer power

My printer has been operating fine until I tried to turn it on to print from my computer. I can't get it to turn on. I have checked all connections and tried different power sources with no luck. Any solutions?

I do not have another computer to connect to this printer. I have been using this printer with this computer since 2002 with no problems. There were no warning signs, just wanted to print from my computer and could not turn it on.

Thank you for your help. I welcome any and all future suggestions.

Hello d421

(01) Will the printer power on when it isn't connected to a computer?

(02) What happens if you connect it to a different computer? (I'm asking this on the off chance that your computer's USB bus is loading down the printer power or there is an incompatibility issue.)

(03) Are you able to run other USB devices on the same computer? (using the same port(s) you've tried w/ the printer)

(04) Have there been any recent changes, occurences, etc. w/ the printer or computer that either precipitated or coincided w/ the onset of this problem?

(05) Has this printer *ever* worked w/ this particular computer (using the USB interface)?

(06) If not, do you still have a computer available on which this printer has worked in the past?

(07) If you do, please, try the printer on that computer. The reason I recommend this is, that printer's USB interface is most likely the original 1.0 standard which is not compatible w/ the newer 2.0 standard. To use it on a computer w/ the newer standard, you would need to enable "Legacy" USB devices in the computer's BIOS. Still, this shouldn't have anything to do w/ power, however, you never know. It's something to consider if the printer has never been tried on the computer you're having difficulty w/ it on.

(08) Do you have *ANY* other information regarding this problem that you can tell us?

(09) Is the printer's optional battery connected? If so, please, remove it and try again.

(10) If the problem follows the printer to another computer (particularly a computer on which the printer has worked before using the USB interface), then I believe one of two things might be happening (A) You have a blown A/C-DC converter in your power cord (the "block" that is inline w/ the power cord (if this printer's power cord has the converter on it); or (2) some part in the printer's built-in power supply is shot.

You can find support on Canon's site for this printer HERE.

You can find downloads including manuals for the printer HERE. I looked through the manual, however, and didn't see any mention of this issue.

Please, post back here w/ your answers along w/ any observations, questions, comments, etc.

Hold of, please, on assigning ratings to the experts' contributiions until you're all set and your questions have been answered. Once ratings are assigned, the problem will be automatically closed and the experts will no longer be able to assist you.

Thank you,

    Hello d421

How did it go? Did the information and links I provided you w/ enable you to determine the cause of no power on your portable printer?

I DO hope that is the case. :) If it isn't, please, post back here and we'll continue to work w/ you.

If it is the case, would you kindly take just a moment to reward my efforts at helping you w/ a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your kindness and the show of appreciation.

Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.

    Hello d421

Thank you for getting back to me and for providing the additional information.

Do you have answers to questions (1), (3) and (9)?

If the printer will not power up when not connected to any computer (with or with out the battery optional installed), then the issue of whether it'll work w/ another computer is moot.

Page 254 of the User Guide found HERE addresses the issue of "no power". It points out the obvious action to take - checking all the connections. However, it does say one more interesting thing. That is, if the printer detects that the circuit it is being plugged into is overloaded it (the printer) will not power on.

To that end, I recommend you take the printer to work or to a friend's house and plug the printer in there. Preferably on a circuit that you know no heavy equipment is on (refridgerator, compressors, powered hand tools, etc.). See if the printer will power on. No computer is needed for this test, however, you might want to bring your laptop along just in case the printer powers on for you.

One other remote possibility is a blown fuse. If a fuse has blown, then you will not get power to come on until that fuse is replaced. So if, for instance, you plugged the printer into an outlet and the printer took a hit (spike), it could have opened a fuse.

I found no mention of a fuse in the manual, howeve. This is just my basic electricity and electronics brain talking now. to check this possibility, you'd have to get the printer apart and search around for a fuse.

Once you found the fuse, you'd need to remove it from printer or desolder or otherwise disconnect one end then test it w/ an Ohm Meter. (Testing it in circuit will not give you an accurate reading.)

I'd be interested in learning the results of plugging the printer in at a different location. Please, do post back w/ your results, questions, observations, etc.

    Thank you

    BJ @:)

Installed new printhead on Lexmark s305 and now my adobe photoshop elements 10 program can not scan but prints fine.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer (if USB connected)> reboot your pc > unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer (if USB connected). Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection or when the WiFi light on the printer turns solid green (if WiFi connected.).

If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable connecting the printer from your computer.
  2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
  3. Delete the Lexmark print object.
  4. Reboot computer.
  5. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - black box where the power cord is plugged into on the back of the printer, and re-plug after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to the computer.
  7. Wait until your computer fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, try to print a document to verify that the problem is fixed.

My epson 1280 will not print

What is your operating system? Windows 2000, XP, Vista or You are running on a Mac OS 10.4.x or 10.5.x and what is the processor. We will need that info so we can further assist you.
By the way for the mean time you may want to try this.

This is what you can call a stand alone test for your printer.

To make sure your printer is physically functioning you can try this.

1. Turn the printer off by holding down the POWER button for about 3 seconds.

2. Disconnect the printer cable that is connecting printer to the computer.

3. Load A4 or LETTER size paper in the sheet feeder on the back of the printer.

4. Hold down the PAPER button and press the POWER button to turn on the printer. Then, release only the POWER button. Continue holding down the PAPER button until the POWER light starts to flash, and then release it.

5. The printer will print a pattern displaying a number and a nozzle pattern with black & color. Examine the nozzle check pattern that has printed. Each staggered horizontal line and straight vertical line should be complete.

If the Nozzle Check Pattern page does not print, prints with gaps or some of the colors do no appear, then there is an issue with the printer. That means that troubleshooting is required on the printer prior to using printer on the computer.

If the Nozzle Check Pattern page prints correctly and completely, the problem may lie within your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. Which like I said earlier we will need the additional info about your computer. Keep us posted so we can help you out.
