Panasonic CD Changer

By Mini Me - usenet poster

Hello:

Will the Panasonic CX-DP601 or Panasonic CX-DP801 fit right into plug
provided by the '99 NB?  Or will I have to get an adapter kit?

Not only tell them to blow it out... document it and send letters to VW with
cc:s to the local better business burerau, the chamber of commerce, the jr.
chamber of commerce, the local consumer's protection agency AND (so he sees
who all you're complaining to) the ower of the car dealership.  Then surf to
crutchfield.com and check out their massive listings things for the car.

Surely you understand that ALL car dealers for ALL makes feel it is their
sworn duty to:
1) Screw you without Vaseline, or
2) Screw you with Vaseline, but put sand in the Vaseline!

Once you accept this fact of life you will be able to make reasonable
decisions regarding anything a dealer says or does.

But yes, just go to the parts window and buy one for $295 and install it
yourself in 10 minutes. They are Plug-and-Play!

Yes I have one too in my 98 passat.  Works OK most of the time, but
occasionally the changer will stop responding (no sound and none of the
buttons on the head unit will respond).  When this happens I have to open
the trunk and unplug the power to the changer momentarily.  To avoid this
problem I press the "power" button before removing the ignition key.  For
those out there considering the 3rd party unit I would advise against it and
shop around at the VW dealers for the factory unit.  A local VW dealer (in
San Diego) was just recently advertising the changer for $295 (it is only a
6 disc, but you won't have any problems).

Yeah, but then they want to charge you an extra 25 bucks for the mount & 50
cents a screw (4 screws I think).  And they are very adamant that they have
to install it for it to work properly, and they want an extra 50-75 bucks
for that (you just plug it in & screw, why does that cost 50 bucks).

I too have had problems with the peripheal interface (only once though), but
I got my changer & interface for $250 (plus a waranty), and you get 2 more
disks & save about 100 bucks.  Also, if you want to swap out your reciever
later, if you bought the VW changer, you might as well throw it away,
because no other head unit is going to work with it :-(

I just installed the Panasonic CX-DP801EUC eight disk changer and the
Peripheral Electronics VWPIL8 adapter cable in a 2000 Jetta.  It fit
nicely into the opening on the left side of the trunk.  You have to
remove the cover from the mating recepticle in the trunk (must be on
to protect the connector).  I drilled one new hole in each of the "L"
brackets and slipped the changer into the factory mounting position.
Took 1/2 hour.  Total cost was just under $300 with tax, the dealer
wanted $495 (~$530 with sales tax)

I am having a problem in that sometimes the volume on the CD is very
low and I can't change CDs.  I then have to cycle the power on the
radio to get the changer working correctly again.  Has anyone else had
a similar experience?

I just went through this myself, so while its still fresh I'll post what
I've found.

That adapter will not allow direct access to disks 7 and 8, or the MIX
button, as I understand it.  If you want the Panasonic 8 disc changer to
behave like its "stock", you can get the "smart" adapter, which runs about
$50 - 80.  Peripheral makes one for the 98 Passat, and I was told that it
won't work in the 99.  I got an adapter from Blitzsafe for my 99 Passat and
it works great.  MIX works, and I can access discs 7 and 8 by pressing 1 and
2 twice.  Try Circuit City or your local equivalent for the adapter.

The Panasonic 8-stacker is a snap to put in and sounds great...I just it myself
the other day (just bought a '99 GLS Passat).  The Panasonic goes on the
upper-tray of the plastic shelf unit in the "first aid" box of the trunk.
Screw-in the brackets to the Panasonic REVERSE of what is described in the
instruction manual (ie, "feet" in, not out).  Apply the double-backed tape the
bottom of the "feet" and carefully place into position.  Don't use the floor
plates that are included -- the unit will never fit on the shelf.  You MUST get
the adaptor for VW's (about $70).  Be sure to connect it to the wiring harness
in the wheel-well and to the Panasonic before trying to afix the Panasonic to
the shelf (once it's afixed, you'll never get it off).  You can use the foam
pad that's protecting the wiring harness in the car to wrap the "translator"
unit on the adaptor.

Total cost: $300 and 10 minutes of my time.  Not bad considering VW charges
$600.

The only minor issue is that the radio in the dashboard is set up with 6
buttons for station pre-sets --- and CD's.  The Panasonic has 8 CD slots, so
you can't select CD 7 or 8 directly.  Once CD 6 is done, it will cue CD 7 and
then CD 8.  Or, if you use the music mix button then selections from CD 7 and 8
will be selected at random with the rest of the CD's.  Small price to pay for a
great system.

Good luck.

Does anyone know or did anyone find out??  I'm about to buy either the
6-disc or the 8-disc one for my '99 Golf GLS.  Can someone who has put
in one of these Panasonic changers into their '99 VW tell me how I
could place either of these changers in the space provided for it in
the trunk?  Thanks in advance.

I think you got a fully-fucntional adaptor.  Where did you get it and
how much was it...?  $70, you said?  As far as I know, you're not
supposed to get the shuffle/mix option on adaptors that will also not
give you disc 7 and disc 8 access.  Check by double pressing buttons 1
and 2 for discs 7 and 8 (like the guy who replied to you said) and
PLEASE let me know if it worked.  I'm looking for a fully functional
adapter for the Panasonic 8-Disc changer, but so far I haven't been
able to get any e-mail responses from some stores.

Thanks for your time.

To add to the queries...
How have you people mounted your changers to the floor?  Did the
double-sided tape that comes with the changer actually hold?

Thanks,

I used the VW bracket. The lining up of the correct holes is a bit tricky.

I would not trust double sided tape, especially in the trunk.

You will need to buy an adapter cable.  They are $19.95 US from
Crutchfield <http://www.crutchfield.com>.  It's a different cable for
each player, so make sure you order the right one (best thing to do is
call and tell them what you want to make sure you get it right).  It
worked on my '99 Jetta GLX - I assume the NB is the same...
