Question about Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 G AF-S Lens

Problem with the Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200 zoom lens.

I bought a Nikon D40x with the 18 - 55 and the AF-S DX 55-200 Nikkor zoom. Yesterday, mounted the 55-200 in the camera and noticed a very strange noise while focusing and then the front part of the lens came out. I handle my camera carefully and keep it in the Nikon camera case that came with the kit. It seems the lens came out of place without any broken parts. Any hints as why this happened and if there is any posible way of fixing it?

I have the same problem. I bought a Nikon DX 55-200mm lens attached it to the camera and in auto mode it makes a weird noice like sratching and will NOT focus at all. In manual it works fine, just not in Auto. I just bought this outfit on EBAY and HOPE I am not being taken for a ride.

My lens is less than 30 days old and I bought it new. It worked fine for several pictures and then all of a sudden the auto focus quit working. I can switch it on manual and it works ok, but when I switch it back to auto all it does is make a noice, but never focuses or will allow me to shoot the picture. I've contacted the place I bought it from and hopefully they will tell me what the problem is, send me a new one or refund my money. I think this particular lens is a lemon.

I just had the same exact problem! However, in my case I was finishing up a photo shoot at work, went to switch lenses, and when I picked up my 55-200mm zoom lens, the tip of it fell off!! I was able to put it back into the end of the lens, but now I am having the same autofocus problem and sound effect. I think it is because it is off track inside the lens. But I have only had mine for 5 months! I'm preparing to send it to Nikon for warrenty repair.

My solution is to use a upgrade camera. I have a D300 and have no problem with the 55-200 1:4.45G ED

On a new Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX Zoom - Nikkor f/3.5-5.6 lens and a Nikon 55-200 mm AF-S DX Zoom f/4.56 lens is VR also included and standard?

Nikon currently lists two 18-55 AF-S DX and two 55-200 AF-S DX lenses. One in each pair has vibration reduction, the other does not. The ones with VR in the name have it, otherwise it doesn't.

VR isn't exactly an option. If it wasn't built into the lens initially, you can't add it later. A lens either has it or it doesn't, though if a lens has VR it can be switched off.

Nikon 18-55 zoom lens doesn't autofocus

You might like to check if the A/M slider switch on the lens by the Nikon label is set to A.
It sometimes gets moved accidently.
Set to M the lens will not autofocus.

The internal circuit board, or the internal harness may be at fault. You will have to send the lens to Nikon for service.
