Question about Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Philips model 60PP920217F

My tv suddenly has decided to separate the colors and the right and left edges are curving in. On a show it looks like the red and green are separated, but on the channel guide, which is blue and white, those colors are separated. Its almost like a shadowing of one color of the other. Can you help me?

You need to replace both convergence ICs STK392-120 they are an easy repair you will also need (4) 6.8ohm Convergence resistors. You can get replacement ICs and the resistors at the following link and they will provide free installation instructions and free on line tech support so you will be able to do the repair yourself and save about 400.00 for a 45 minute repair. heres the link.

Adjust your convergence in the menu first, this can happen when you move the tv, or loose connection.

The color is way off on the tv. It also looks curved, like if there are words on the tv they go up at an angle toward the edges of the tv. When you try to align the color on the tv you can get the center...

This is a common problem. Its called a convergence failure.

Problem #1) Convergence

Symptoms:

  • Screen Looks 3D
  • Colors wont align
  • Video may look distorted
Problem #2 CRT Fluid has clouded over. Symtoms
  • Dull looking video
  • White looking video
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking video

You can see some examples and find a fix here...

Shadow images and scrolling banner curves upward and back down.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

This is failure of convergence out ICs in TV. Qualified TV tech will replace convergence out ICs or board.

Hitachi 57SWX20B 3D Effect due to green light convergence problem

I'm trying to fix the issue on my 43FDX20B. So far, I'm able to move the lines up and down, but can't get the left/right motion to fix it. The attached link has the dynamic mode instructions, so you can correct this issue yourself.

http://home.comcast.net/~leebailey00/Hitachi_DCAM_Manual.pdf

The only thing I didn't have was the screen overlay jig the manual talks about. I decided to create one myself and use the screen as a beginning template. I went to our local hardware store and picked up some home window weather covering. The roll cost about $15, is a clear strong plastic and the template was very easy to create. I used a straight edge after I put dots on the plastic and measured the lines for being square and equal after I took it off my tv. Good thing is that if you don't like what you make the first time, you have a 25' roll to use to try again (ha).

What you have there is a PTV835 chassis and the convergence amps are two STK392-110 Sanyo built Ics mounted on a large aluminum heatsink on the signal board... It could very well be the amps and it could also be the protect fuse 1008 (2a 250v), fuse 1007 (1a 250v) and a 1a mylar cap at location 2055, all of those are located on the upright digital convergence board.
This is not an easy job in this particular unit and not one that I could write-out in a step-by-step set of instructions, too many varibles. The short version would be to strongly suggest that you take this to a qualified shop and have them do it..
I would also suggest that you ask them to replace the amps with the STK392-150's for greater reliability. In fact you could purchase them yourself from acme in Florida and save a few bucks. Also, take the unit to them don't pay the pickup delivery and you'll save a little and always get a written estimate first before any work is done...
Hope this helps!
Bill
PS: A job like this in my shop is approximately 425 - 500 dollars plus tax including parts.
