"Pen" Scanners

By Perkins - usenet poster

To take notes away from homeI've thought of a "Pen" scanner such as the
QuickLink Pen-Shaped Handheld OCR Scanner or the C Technologies  C-Pen
200. The idea seems great in theory  but I know of no one who has
actually used them.
Any body had experience with them? For taking notes for later OCR use
have you encountered any problems?

Depot among other places for $200. It worked
well, at least 90% accuracy or better. The
controls are crude: there are two buttons used to
navigate through menus. It has the capacity for
100 pages of storage. It requires an infrared
adaptor that costs at least $40, so the C Pen
plus the adaptor is $240, while the Quicklink Pen
is $150, has 1000 pages of memory, and includes
the cable link to the PC. I did not get the C Pen
only because it is more expensive than the
Quicklink pen. If I find that Quicklink is not
accurate, I would get the C Pen 600, which costs
$250, and has 1000 or 2000 pages of memory and
more text on the screen. Bottom line - at least
the C Pen works.

The QuickLink Pen works just like it's
advertised.  It's best features are the notes and
tables programs.  Notes lets you created files on
the pen with automatic or manualy entered names
that you just scan into -they go to your PC as MS
Word format DOC files.  Tables does the same but
you scan into cells to create a table/spreadsheet
and these are saved in Excel format.  It also has
a big database for addresses and a small one for
links, but I don't really use them.

The only possible problem is if your serial port
isnt' set up right (comes with a cable and IR).
