My drive plays DVD's but will not read CD-ROM ? it did at one time is this a setting error

16X DVD(+/-)R/RW 12X RAM (+/-)R DL LightScribe SATA drive

I Have a HP Pavillion a1730n that is 9 just 12 months old. It will play DVD's fine however it will not read CD's or play music cd's at this time. I have tried muti steps. IE checked the device manager it is good and I have uninstalled and reinstalled good here and I have downloaded a program HLV Compatibility due to being told with vista I did not have the drivers. I have went to HP's web site and updated all drivers at this time. do you think this is a seting or the drive is bad. It did play cd's when I bought it. but now I can only get the drive to read DVD's. I was wanting to install purchased software and it will not read the CD-ROM. any suggetions would be great thanks

what does it do when you put in a cd/non-dvd in the drive? Does it spin or does it say the disc is blank?

DVD and CD require different spec lasers (DVD requires 1.3nm compared to 2.1nm for CD)

It seems like your CD laser is broken, although your DVD laser still works. Replace the drive, it's not too expensive.

HELP MY COMPUTER WONT READ ANY CD'S EXCEPT A DVD,, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?? ANY HELP

hi

you have either one of these ..

5187-5619 = DVD-ROM/CD-RW combination drive - 48X CD-R write, 32X CD-RW rewrite, 48X CD-ROM read, 16X DVD-ROM read

EL436-69001 = 48X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW optical drive - 48X read, 32X read, 48X read, 16X max write speed

make sure you buy CDs or DVDs which are speed compatible to your optical drive or COMBO drive speeds

if you are busying compatible speed CD media, then take some compressed air (can) and clean the drive bay and inside the optical drive area, to dedust it .

go to this site and review all the related sites .. read carefully and try to figure out what the possibility (issue) is .

if ALL this fails, you may have to replace the DRIVE itself

i hope this helps

I need to know if my DVD Drive can burn dual layer Discs. The Discs are DVD+R DL and my dvd drive is an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200A ATA. Thanks

Hi anternidrumm,

According to the site below, the drive can burn dual layers discs:

"The 20x DVD multi writer opens up new dimensions for flexible read and write functions. This high-performance DVD/CD-burner is able to read your DVDs at a speed of 16x and CDs at 48x. It also brings fascinating dynamics into play when writing your blank disks. Now it can even write DVD-R DL two layer media at 12x, while reaching a speed of up to 20x for DVD+R and DVD-R. DVD+R9 and DVD+RWs are processed at 8x and DVD-RWs at 6x. And DVD-RAM can be recorded with up to 12x DVD speed. So how fast can it burn my CDs, you might ask? Even here, with speeds of 48x (CD-R) and 32x (CD-RW), it’s at the top of its class."

3. is your system recognizing the hard drive (go to start>run>type devmgmt.msc and press enter> and look under cd/dvd rom drives... is your device listed? is it showing with a ? unknown device or a ! next to it's name?
a. if the device is not listed chances are you didn't set up the jumper correcly when installing the device or the device may not be powered or there's an issue with the data cable connectd to the device and the motherboard, check your physical setup.

Download needed for driver for samsung 16x dl dvd /-rw w/lightscribe

You usually don't need a driver for dvd rom drive, the controller is right on the device and if you can't see the dvd rom drive in my computer or device manager check if the jumper configuration is correct and if your power cable is properly seated as well as the data cable on you dvd drive and your motherboard.

usually the driver.. if needed comes with as part of windows... check windows update website and do a manual update search (instead of automatic)...

check the hardware manufacturer website for an updated driver.
