Chances are it's just dirty from use. If you can carefully remove it and clean the contacts with some rubbing alcohol and let it dry, then replace it, it should work just fine.
The trackball is easily removed for cleaning by just pulling the trim ring around the trackball off with your fingernail. Remove the trackball and clean with alcohol. Reverse the process to clean.
You might have damaged some circuitry, but can try cleaning the trackball with alcohol and a Q-Tip. You need to roll the ball around with the alcohol-soaked Q-Tip, then let it try. This will have the nice side effect of helping drive off any leftover water, too.
