Computer locked up and can't get into anything

Computer comes up but won't do anything.
1st "The device in modular bay cannot be identified. etc, etc." Press 'esc' to ignore and goes on into loading.
2nd On opening screen - "Active Desk Top Recovery", whatever you do here makes no difference
3rd Then - "avast!: INI file modification" A program is attempting to modify. Yes or no answer doesn't help
4th Attempt to go into "Control Panel" (or any program) but looks like is processing, but hour glass goes away very soon and no function happens.

Tried to do 'Control - F11' to go in and do 'reimaging' to factory specs, but will not go into
Student friend tried to load Avast! virus, etc. protection from internet and immediately locked system. Computer did have McAfee protection awhile back and think McAfee and Avast! are working against each other. Would like to take system back to factory installed by reimaging, but can do nothing.
What di I do??????

Try starting in safe mode and remove the offending program.

  1. Start the laptop
  2. After the Dell Screen vanishes begin pressing F8
  3. You will get a Windows Startup Screen
  4. Select SafeMode and press enter twice
  5. Windows should load up
  6. Go into Control Panel Add Remove Programs
  7. Remove the anti virus software and anything else you suspect maybe causing grief.
  8. Restart the laptop normally and see what happens.
  9. Hopefully by now you will be able to go back and do the factory imaging.

Well, my personal advise is to restore the systems, which mean that you need the windows disk an reinstall everything from zero...

My Dell D600 gets a system modular bay cannot be identified error. What do I do/

Specify tag number, and windows version used. But, usually is the chipset drivers. Another common issue is the external card reader not being installed by default inside windows.

I need solution

Ok, this is a misworded error message on dells end. this laptop does not have a modular bay instead it has a locked in disc drive. Based on what i have seen on other dell laptops i would have to say the cd drive is going bad. To test this try removing the cd drive. Power the laptop on and push the eject button then power the laptop off. Flip the laptop overand there will be a screw to hold the drive in, this screw will be close to the center and will be the only screw in a square hole, remove this screw. Now if you followed my directions, you should have the drive out. Pull the tray out as far as it will go then grab the two sides closest to the laptop and gently pull it out. If you are having problems you can stick a flat screw driver in the square hole and push the piece of metel to the side to remove.

Now power the laptop on it may say something about there not being a cd drive(optical drive) if it does not say: "the device in the system modular bay cannot be identified" then you need to replace to CD drive.

It won't boot to the os

The modular bay refers to the optical drive (CD drive). There is a small screw holding it, I've had machines at my shop that this screw fallen out and the drive wasn't making a good connection. Be sure that the drive hasn't slid out a bit. Take it out clean the connection and put it back, making sure it's seated properly. Try this, then let me know, and we'll go from there.

This screen comes up when it is turned on: "The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified, etc.

I had the same problem.  I took out the optical drive, and powered it on, and it worked.  I may have to purchase a new optical drive?

Bought second hand c640

Power off even it it takes a battery removal. Now check modular bays and remove then fully insert each device and retry power up. If same results, try repeating above with one of the modular devices removed.
