this sounds like a lack of resources on your system... i would recommend that you increase your RAM ..say if u got 256Mb upgrade to around 512Mb ... also you should look at your CPU processor also ... this would have an effect on the speed and how your system goes about burning DVD's ...also make sure nothing else is running in the background ...say virus scanners etc....also maybe u can try this software ..works nicely:-
